No, I'd prefer to get rid of the payroll tax and invest it myself, and have a means-tested program for those who can't. Instead we're stuck with this horribly designed program that will bankrupt us.
yeah good plan. make all the workers invest their own money and when they fail make the government support them anyway. Super. A+.
Regular people are terrible investors. SS is a guaranteed income that most americans rely on and cherish.
Maybe right wing candidates should campaign on eliminating SS. That seems like a good plan. Do it.
You don't need to know anything about the market to invest money. If you were born in 1980 and put every penny Social Security stole from you in a basic index fund you'd be a multimillionaire when you retired in 2045.
With Social Security you will literally get less back than you paid in.
It says right on the annual statement.
"Your estimated benefits are based on current law. Congress has made changes to the law in the past and can do so at any time. The law governing benefits amounts may change because, by 2034, the payroll taxes collected will be enough to pay only 79% of the scheduled benefits."
Some things never change, Democrats will always be dishonest.
Pointing out that a government program is money wasting monstrosity that does not accomplish what it was created to accomplish does NOT mean people want anyone to "die in poverty". This sort of dishonest stupidity is so unhelpful.
In what universe does "balance" mean completely take over?
EVERYONE supports a social safety net. Wanting it done responsibly in a way that doesn't ruin the very thing you're trying to fix isn't unreasonable.
In 1960, going to the doctor was like going to the grocery store. Today the government spends over a TRILLION dollars a year on health care and somehow healthcare got WORSE.
‘Healthcare got worse.’
Put that on the list of one of the dumbest things you or anyone else has ever said on LRC.
Are you a troll? I don’t think so but saying things like that suggest you May be.
probably you just never read any history so you are very very ignorant.
Advances and innovation had nothing to do with government....
The free market drives innovation.
Life expectancy increased by 17 years from 53.22 years in 1920 to 70.11 years in 1965.
Since government got involved in 1965 it's only gone up 8 years and has actually started declining for the first time since World War 1 in 2016...
the Democrats are responsible for Social Security, medicare, medicaid, unemployment insurance, rural electrification, 40-hour work week, unions, minimum wage, workplace safety, the affordable care act and many other programs americans love and use every day. In every case the right wingers and 'libertarians' fought the lefties, saying it would mean communism and tyranny and extinguish the american spirit.
Biden took millions of children out of poverty last year, until the Rs insisted the children should be put back into poverty just in case anyone was getting something they didn't deserve. So they are now back in poverty. Clap.
"Workplace Safety" (OSHA) was created by Richard Nixon (R). The child tax credit was created by Republicans (Kasich) in 1997 and expanded in 2017 by Republicans without a Democrat vote.

Thanks. My plan is better than paying it out to everyone, including those who don't need it, and eventually bankrupting the entire country.
And yes, someone should run on SS reform. Would have been nice if it weren't designed so poorly in the first place.
Once you give away the free sh*t it's political suicide to take it away. That's the only reason Democrats do it. They do not give a damn about the actual people.

well good on nixon for signing a bill into law but the Dems had control of both the house and the senate in 1970 when OSHA was signed into law. but the bigger point is that workplace safety issues started in the 19c with the railroads and the right wingers were not pleased by it. Government intrusion into corporate affairs = slippery slope to socialism, you know. (sarcasm)
I don't have the patience to look up the child tax credit's creation but I hope the right wingers are in favor of it because it seems to work very well. I do know the Rs just voted to restrict it in some way.
reminder of how little Republicans care about public health:
8/10 of the states with the highest per capita COVID deaths have Republican governors.
(the two dem states are NJ and MI)
freedumb, baby. you crazy kids.
and remember, for a decade or more the GOP has tried to take away health insurance from Americans. Imagine that.
The GOP exists as a tool to hand more money to rich people and business. That's what it's all about. They've created a culture war as cover to make that cash transfer happen.
Sure would be nice if the m/gas realized that handing more of their money to rich people is a bad idea and instead decided government helping with their health care and roads would be a good thing. But nah more fun to talk about toilet water pressure and transgenders.
Almost 100% of cars on the road will be EVs in 20 years. Gas cars will be very expensive in comparison and will therefore be impractical. Also by then, private car ownership will be cut at least in half as most people rely on robotaxis. All robotaxis will be EVs.
That's absolutely absurd. No one alive who knows anything about EVs is making that claim.
Even in moonbat California they are shooting for 100% of car sales to be electric by 2035 and trucks by 2045.
That's just sales. People will be driving their gas cars LONG after 2042.
I am making the claim and I know more about EVs than anyone you have ever met.
Others like Tony Seba from Stanford make a similar claim.
It doesn't matter what California's "goal" is. The market is driving EV adoption and all the automakers know it. Most of the major automakers are saying they will be at least 50% electric by 2030. But they will be going out of business by then instead.
Tesla and a slew of Chinese automakers are already delivering 100% EVs. They will soon dominate the world market.
Look at what happened to auto deliveries in Q1 2022 vs. Q1 2021:
Toyota: down 15%
GM: down 24%
Ford: down 17%
Stellantis: down 13%
Honda: down 23%
Tesla: up 68%
Soon, almost nobody will want a gas-powered car. They are too expensive to own and they suck to drive. This will drive a death spiral for used gas cars in the next few years. Get rid of yours while you can.

Auto deliveries were not down because people didn't want the cars but because of chip shortages. You know that Fat but you would rather mislead people.

Tesla had to deal with chip shortages too. Chips are not the whole story.

Yes the rest of the story is inflation and a weak economy.
This lie you're telling is in the same vein as the "Biden created 6 million jobs" lie. It simply doesn't reflect actual reality.
In the seven hours during which White House records show no phone calls to or from then-President Donald Trump on January 6, 2021, among the calls that are conspicuously absent is one Trump made to then-Vice President Mike Pe...
we'll see. the wapo still thinks we don't have enough information to understand the missing calls in the log. And the trump admin was just so sloppy and incompetent and arrogantly ignoring rules and norms that you don't know what is on purpose and what is just incompetence.

I've never seen a Tesla in my life.
a dude who has never seen a tesla in his life and thinks health care has gotten worse since medicare was enacted really should spend his time reading history and newspapers, not making ridiculous arguments on message boards.
