The nay sayers will never be satisfied. I am a 59 year old retired Army officer, physician, and BYU graduate. Just a few points I would like to make:
1. Not sure why people can't believe someone that says they couldn't run more than once a week on their mission? I served a mission 40 years ago and only of of my missionary companions was willing to run so I couldn't run. Connor Mantz has posted that he gained 30 pounds on his mission. Yes some can run... most cannot. My oldest son walked on for BYU 15 years ago as a freshman and made the team but never was able to make the team after his mission. He has a 2:22 marathon to his credit.
2. BYU held out two of their runners from regionals and not a lot of people made a big deal about that or even noticed. For the last week all we heard about was the dominant NAU team and that it was a forgone conclusion who was going to win. Maybe what we saw today was excellent coaching by Ed Eyestone and a team win for people that have had signifcant disappointment in the last few years?
3. If age really mattered that much why hasn't BYU dominated for the last few decades?
4. Why do I bother responding to trolls?
5. I wish people could enjoy the sport and not bring such bias and bigotry into what actually was a fairly big surprise. The races get run because predictions mean nothing, in the end. What a fun day for a BYU fan! We have had more disappointments than actual celebrations at the NCAA champoinships so we'll take this day and enjoy it.
