In the mid 1970s there had only 2/3 Kenyans faster than Bayi over 800m, not his event, none faster over 1500m or the mile and in 1979 the 5000m season best was 13:12.29 to Mr Suleiman Nyambui (TAN). The "Tanzanians" was used ahead of the word "Ethiopians" in common running phrases back then to justify altitude training.
