The press is already there for the NY or Boston Marathons.
It might cost less for the press then going to another location (Houston).

What press? Vogue?

Houston promised the same for 2012.
We have already learned that one of them have lied to us. Now we will find out if Houston is as dishonest as Mary. If so, then they are EQUAL.
Anyone that tries to blame it on NBC or the USOC or IOC or USATF is ignorant. None of those organizations promised National Television coverage. Only one person did that.
In order to make that sort of a promise you should have it in writing from NBC or DON'T PROMISE.
Right.
Just 4 of the 7 largest newspapers in the US (all of which are larger than the largest Texas newspaper):
1 Wall Street Journal New York 2,024,269
2 USA Today Virginia 1,900,116
3 New York Times The New York 927,851
4 Los Angeles Times California 657,467
5 Washington Post The DC 582,844
6 Daily News New York 544,167
7 New York Post New York 508,042

There are also some other minor media outlets in NYC called NBC, CBS and NBC. Some other small ones in NYC that you might be interested in are Time and Sports Illustrated.
Would you please just go away now???
But televised broadcast isn't in Houston's bid, right? Sorry, but most Americans aren't getting their news from NY papers. Almost nobody outside of NY metro reads the Daily News or NY Post. The newspapers that most Americans will read to find out about the OT will be carrying wire reports from Houston, just like the wire reports that went out from NY and Boston last time. As for those 'Big 3,' they have affiliates (with cameras, believe it or not) in every city in America. Including Houston. Where the network is headquartered has essentially no bearing on what they can and will cover. Just another free lesson for you.
But the average entry fee isn't $200? Sorry, but the point made by someone else wasn't that most people get their news from NY papers (nice strawman btw), but rather, that there actually are a lot of media already in NYC so your argument that it's cheaper to send press to Houston isn't very cogent when many of the most important media already are in NYC and don't have to spend anything to cover it. Where the network is headquartered and where its people live who will be covering the event are very relevant to the cost of covering it. Are you implying that NBC will dust off its nationally unknown Houston talking heads to cover the OTs?
There certainly are drawbacks to NYC but media coverage (or lack thereof) isn't one of them. If you want to argue that the media coverage will be greater in Houston because it is cheaper to send press there, have fun living in your own bubble.
The point needs to be who cares how much media is in NYC. The OTM is going to get slim to no coverage whether in NYC or the north slope of Alaska.
duke v,
You really are dense. The thread is about Mary crying. STICK TO THE POINT. Why does she whine so damn much? It has nothing to do with anything other than the fact that Houston out bid her. This thread is proof positive that she has rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.
She has been exposed as a selfish fraud and I credit USATF for exposing her.
No, it isn't, when will that finally get through your thick skull?
You (melo)dramatically overstate how many NY media members cover OT marathons that are held outside of NY. Are you sure you aren't channeling that notable NYC troll, especially with that bit of projection about living in a bubble?
Selfish? Agree. To the extent it involves her position at NYRR. I don't know her personally.
A Fraud? Disagree. What's so phony about looking out after the best interests of the organization you're hired to lead?
USATF exposing her? Huh? They have two bidders and pissed one off. If I'm on the sidelines (which I am), I'm never going to participate in this circus.
I can not turn away from this thread. 4 years ago I felt like we were cheated in the bidding process. Now I know that we were cheated. I was asked for an interview after the fact and declined, saying that I thought the attention should be on New York and Boston. I have never been happier with my decision than I am today. Keep em coming.
Right. The outfit that comes off worst of all in this deal is USATF, which is about par for the course. Logan caved into a deal that said give us both Trials or nothing. Houston had a lot of oil money around. He had two major bidders (Boston was not one) and he could have made them both happy and he did not.
Yep.
It's almost impossible to get an editor to publish a running story in the dead of winter.
Also, there are only 6 Olympic spots at stake. That's a tiny percentage of the US Olympic team so if the event's not in the back yard, it's hard to justify the travel costs during an Olympic year when sending writers to London will eat up a major chunk of the budget.
that's not true, I definitely watched it on the Today Show before running out my door to catch the first loop.

And to the poster who said there were more people at the Trials in NY last time than in NY, I disagree. I was at both and thought the Boston crowd was much bigger.
I was also at both, and I disagree with you, the NY crowds were bigger.
The press lives locally in every town and disseminates content via electronic means.
USATF represents the entire US and under Doug Logan will no longer accept bribes from NYRR, Chi, Bos, Nike.
Yahoo, CNN, Al Jazeera, BBC, CND, are how we get our news now via the internet. Newspapers and TV broadcast news departments are minor players in 2010.
Your sense of entitlement cracks me up. Congrats on sending your letter to USATF and reinforcing Glenn Latimer's assertion of an overstacked, uncompetitive pains in the asses field. He probably pulled out your complaint letter while getting the standard tightened to 2:19.
Not a fan of Mary or NYRR, but you are right, this guy sounds like a whiney pain in the ass.
You should have appreciated the event more buddy. You are the equivilant of the 2:45 marathon runner complaining about the course and not getting elite treatment.
No wonder they wanted to treat you like crap
So Duke v, did the NYRR dispatch you to defend their honor in this thread?
Are you trying to work your way up to Mary's secretary or something?

Stop the lies, NY weasels.
