Newton is very, very progressive. The notion that Newton cops would baldly target a group of minority spectators without any awareness of the optics is ludicrous. They surely understand the meta dynamics at play here.
And, yes, I saw them deploy their cannon (at Des, no less). I’m not sure whether this is an instance of overpolicing or not, and I really cannot say whether an entirely white group behaving similarly would have received the same attention. But it is in bad faith for those supposedly targeted here to not at least admit that they were violating rules as well as norms.
I think Lauren Fleshman's take is good. Yes, they're violating rules but how would white people be treated with the same situation.
They got 3 calls of complaints and a cop came by (or maybe 2 of them?) but before he did anything, he CALLED FOR BACKUP. If this was a mostly white crowd, I don't think he calls for backup. I think he just tells them in a friendly way to stay behind the line cause they got complaints.
Nike violated rules in having their runners use that first carbon-plated shoe not available to anyone else. No one did crap about that.
