and 4:36 by Carmen Alder. Solid effort for the freshman. also Julia-Smith running 4:40. Thorvaldson 4:46 after running 16:07 yesterday. Also, Kate Peters 9:17 in the 3000 Friday! far and away the best high school time this year so far.
Looking at the qualifying lists and making some guess as to who is not declared, some surprises. At this point Cailie Logue doesn't look to be in either the 3,000 or 5,000, while Bethany Hasz may squeak in the 3,000. Something like 9:02 or 15:45 would be required to change that. With WVA DMR not making it, McCabe, Ryan, Valby likely fresh going into 3000 so I would think they would be favorited over the many coming off the DMR or 5000 the night before, such as Wayment, Chmiel, Gregory, Chelangat, Bush. I think Camarena and Mackay choose mile over 3000.
Current DMR rankings 11:00 flat to get in this year - FL would like to qualify 1 Arkansas 10:51.6 Gear, Wilson, Maloney, Gregory likely sub for Maloney (800) 2 Virginia Tech 10:53.2 Torino, Price, Ballowe, Butler may sub for Butler (800) 3 Washington 10:57.7 Heisterman, Thomas, Gibson, Schadler may sub several legs 4 Ole Miss 10:57.8 Elkin, Eckford, Winn, Vissa may sub for Vissa (mile) 5 Notre Dame 10:57.8 Sullivan, O'Brien, Ryan, Markezich 6 BYU 10:58.4 Hunter, Hunter, Seymour, Wayment dont look as strong as last year 7 NC State 10:58.8 Bush, Griffin, Vess, Shaw apparently no Tuohy hurts on anchor some 8 Kentucky 10:58.8 Gearing, Miles, Schwinghamer, Herman 9 Utah 10:59.2 Ryan, Eriksen, Manson, Plourde 10 Michigan 10:59.5 Hill, Sutherland, Rynda, Tran 11 Oklahoma State 10:59.9 Galvydyte, Ollison, Auerbach, Roe 12 Virginia 11:00.1 Appleton, Seaman, Sabbakhan, Barnett 13 Florida 11:00.9 Barrett, Tate, Spyrou, Valby 14 North Carolina 11:01.6 Hansen, Hernandez, Paige, Parks 15 Kentucky (B) 11:01.8 Gearing, Moss, Schwinghamer, Herman 16 Indiana 11:02.6 Hertenstein, Snow, Mindak, Stoffel
Valby anchored that 11:00.9 for Florida the day before she ran her 8:53.89. If they don't run the DMR she will be definitely be a favorite in the 3000.
Virginia runs 10:56.8 to get 2nd in ACC ahead of NC St 10:58.1 (VT wins) so 12 women's teams under 11:00 now. OSU on the bubble at 10:59.88 as we speak.

BTW Butler split 4:29.8 to win for VT. They look tough for Nationals with this lineup.
Here are the 14 schools w/DMR times under 11:00 as of Fri night (2/25):
# = converted mark from JDL meet on flat track
1 Arkansas 10:51.6 2 Virginia Tech 10:53.21# 3 Ole Miss 10:56.39 -- Arkansas (B) 10:57.26 4 Oregon 10:57.28 5 Oregon State 10:57.35 6 Washington 10:57.69# 7 Stanford 10:57.74 8 Notre Dame 10:57.84 9 BYU 10:58.37 10 NC State 10:58.80# 11 Kentucky 10:58.81# 12 Utah 10:59.24
----------- 13 Michigan 10:59.46 14 Oklahoma State 10:59.88
Best quality depth ever.
Arkansas obvious favorite.
Watch out for Stanford. JJ has them rising from the dead again -- as happened in xc.
Heymach (4:04/1500 for 6th place at Oly Trials last summer) came from way back to almost win that race tonight at UW.
I disagree with Arkansas as the favorite. Krissy Gear has looked terrible for some reason (Probably Lance Harter). Lauren Gregory doesn't have the kick to finish the race off.
Now if Gear was right and could anchor the thing, that would be their best bet. Not sure that they will put Maloney on there either. If Maloney split 2:00 and gave Gregory 3-4 seconds, maybe she could hold on. I don't see it happening.

Yeah I’m personally calling VTech as the favorites if Butler runs it, and Stanford or BYU the favorites if she doesn’t. They also have a very fast time, the flat track DMR conversion is not very generous, and Butler is the kind of star anchor that can win them a title (especially with her 2:01 speed).

I agree on Gear although she did look good leading off the DMR last night. Arkansas maybe will have Gregory fresh if she skips mile and just runs 3,000 - although that is taking a chance as 3,000 could be loaded. BYU right now is the 12th qualifier I think - they may see the writing on the wall and let Wayment run 5,000 and 3,000. VT looked very good in ACC - but Butler was fresh as DMR was the night before the 800 prelims. But she may give up her 800 for the team. Ole Miss with Vissa on the anchor looks dangerous as well - but she like Gear and/or Gregory will have mile prelims first. FL has not qualified and did not run Valby in SEC so they are out. There are a whole bunch of teams qualified 10:57-10:59.

Gear will not have mile prelims. She is not going to qualify (unless she runs 4:34 in the SEC final this afternoon). I somewhat agree and disagree that she looked good yesterday in the DMR. She looked absolutely terrible for most of it. But she did look fantastic finishing it off and blowing by everyone to hand off in first. Not sure what is going on with her.

Ah yes, I forgot she has not qualified - that's how "bad" she has been. Perhaps a plus for their DMR. My mistake.
