Yeah, I'm not sure cringe means what you think it means, or what you want it to mean.
And obviously, if the "derived meaning" you mention made the slightest bit of sense, and more importantly, if Evangelical Christianity wasn't such a destructive force within American society, the "glory to god" babble probably wouldn't grate as much as it does.
