No run yet today, but yesterday I did a long fartlek about 70 minutes worth. Starting summer training for cross.

Biked 22 in 1:43:38. 57F and overcast, but felt cooler.
Accompanied by my bride, my favorite training partner.
Life is good.
Again (3rd time) I offer my thanks to wejo and company for restoring our beloved thread. I was not in the loop regarding Sunday's massive editing of the board, but I'm happy our voices were heard and everything is back to normal.
Monday: 30', 8 x ~300m hill, 20'
Tuesday: 82' easy, lifting
Wednesday: 50' tempo
Keep up the good work, all!

Pretty ironic considering YOU are the main reason for the editting.
The Beat Goes On.

The Lady is on a very hot roll since Boston.
A decent day for revel rousers all around.
It was Great to shake Rodger's hand.IMHO he will always be the Man.
2 mile "tempo/jog" at 8 minute pace ... damn, being fat, old and not training but 2 times a week makes all this running tough now!
Hey driske, see your running is going well. Cheers to all.
I am glad to confirm that I have recovered but I am still not running in any disciplined/organized fashion. I am on vacation by the seaside in Circeo (near Rome) and enjoying the break from everything, running and the web included.
To answer your inquiry about my injury: after some very in depth analysis with fellow runners, PTs, doctors, orthopedic surgeons, some olympic team massage therapists (we call them "athletic preparators" here) we came to the conclusion that Minimalism and/or barefoot running was NOT the problem. The temptation for some prompted judgement was there, but it was not the problem.
The onset of the injury coincided with a track workout when i tested the Vibram 5Fs Sprint model for the very first time. They have a non-elastic double rear velcro strap system which fastens right on the achilles and i might have fastened my left way too tight.
Other factors could have been high level of overall fatigue and stress; a week (i started doubles) of little sleep and just not being as tuned in as someone who is serious about running should be. And possibly some biomechanical discrepancies between my left and right foot amplified by working out on the track with the inner shoe fastned too tight...
The point is, however, that I never encountered even remotely similiar problems with the Vibram classic model (they have a very loose fastning system arounf the whole foot) in years of camparable track workouts at comparable levels ofoverall fatigue. So...
My right foot was totally fine, so still I would not conclude that it was the fault of the shoes. And I know of other runners who use the sprint model who have had no problems at all.
Incidentally, during my downtime I became the receptacle of endless stories of injury from spikes being laced too tight. Some quite serious, including very noticeable calcifications on the upper foot.
Anyway all is well now and i will start training agin after my vacation. I have rediscovered my affinity for open water swimming. It had been 3 years since any real sort of downtime and in that respect it will have done no harm to have grokked back into injury mode...
Glad to know the thread made it back up after going down.
I suppose you could say it is injury-prone yet resilient...
tpcb,
Your presence and words were like a rainbow coming around the bend. Glad to hear the injury is mending nicely, and the rediscovered affinity for water finding expression.
We must make provisions to keep in touch, should this thread ever totally go down.
For a while it was tempting to throw in the towel, but eventually cooler heads did prevail.
Tomorrow brings the arrival of my British friend for the running of Grandma's Marathon. My family is excited to welcome him to Wisconsin.
Tonight's run, under the light of a full moon. 4 miles in 36 min. Cow paths and country roads.
How does a new born calf from 2days to 3 weeks of age ,manage to run sprints and pickup's that would humble the best track men and women of the World???
14:40/5K,
23.66 miles on the bike 2;02:36 . beautiful weather
driske, you are a gentleman and you are on.
will definitely stay in touch. im somewhat committed to keep contributing to this thread and i hope it never goes down permanently.
i don't think it was its original (or intended) mission, but it [this thread] could indeed represent that whisper of reproduceable Eternity that Running is for many a runner...even on those days when running is just not possible.
keep healthy. And all the others too.
tpcb
tpcb,
What premonition prompted a mention of Eternity, and things philosophical in nature?
For tonight we received the jarring news of the unexpected death of one of my younger cousins. Dan lived his bikers life to the max. His irrepressible joy for life was infectious.
Travel well Danny, it was good to have known you.
5.2 mile course, 38;34 under a full moon, 48F and calm.
sorry to hear about this family loss driske. My heartfelt but distanced condolences.
Running often causes my thoughts to take a form of their own. Some of the most intense, wild and uninhibitedly creative thinking and analysis i have done, has often occurred while running.
The amazing thing about growing older is that similiar thoughts have sometimes come about while even just thinking about running. A form of parallel processing if you will. Which no doubt helps to deal with injury. And grief.
I don't think there is a connection necessarily. Some sort of parallelism, maybe yes...
Running day: long, long swim in the sea, felt like a walrus ...
Bests
driske,
May I add my heartfelt sympathies for your loss. It's nice to know your cousin lived his life to the fullest, yet it is still difficult when something so unexpected intrudes. Our friend tpcb as usual makes a good point about the therapeutic aspect of running. Hopefully your runs will help you cope.
RD
driske, here you go..., it is night here... just thinking about Running reading RD's lines...maybe what i meant to be "parallel" about Running, Eternity, this thread and other events...
you run
i run
you think
i think
you post

with the others
we post
parallel lines
don't ever meet
parallel posters
could end up meeting
when?
Infinity?
or
Eternity?
