I think it's the other way around. If track guys could put skill to their athletic ability, the football and basketball players would be out of a job.
I've personally seen Gatlin as a 19-year old, getting off the couch for the summer, do a 44 inch vertical for a random physical. This is with no specific jump training and out of shape. I've also seen David Oliver, catch alley-oops off the back board with ease.
FYI - The average vertical in the NBA is like 31 inches or something like that. They are super jumping freaks, they have a unique combination and height to go with their athleticism.
