If wind was the issue in this race, how many other competitors had PRs?
Good point
Worth noticing that her 200m time is also miles ahead of the 2nd ranked times of Jones
Steroids is the main issue here not the wind guage

I'm sure this has been discussed before but I wanted to open it up again. I'm working on the homepage and read how the Indianapolis track is getting destroyed and its where Flojo ran her 10.49 world record. I always knew people viewed the record as suspect (wind). But then I saw it was in the quarterfinals of the Olympic Trials.
Then I saw an actual video of it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usYdMLIXoPc
I bet most of our viewers have never seen the race. She sure doesn't react like she thinks she just smashed the world record. Can some of the old timers explain how this record is still on the books? Or maybe one of the stat geeks.
They even show the wind gauge going off the charts immediately after her run.
Update from 2014: A great in-depth piece on the wind and Flojo's 10.49 has been written and can be found here:
Flojo was a mix of talent, training, desire, and drugs.
All 4 were needed for her records, and all in record quantity.
She was a beast, that's for sure. She sprinted like a man.
Wind and roid aided. Biggest joke record in the books. There are some in track that are considering finally throwing it out based on wind. Unfortunately her other roid times will still pollute the books. 10.61 and Jeter is next at 10.64
Shelly Ann has what I believe is the clean record of 10.70. I think she or Okagbare could run 10.60.
Okagbare has the potential, but she thinks too much each race. She needs to start trusting her technique and just letting it rip. It's psychological.
Shelly has the technique and mental part down, but she's very little.
Flo Jo didn't have any talent. Look at the race, no technique at all, she doesn't even have a drive phase, just pops straight up and powers down the track like a man.
Going in to her roid year of '88 she had only broken 11.00 once, just barely. After the 10.49 she was literally booed off the track in Europe because everyone knew she was cheating.

You can see the men's triple jump in the background of FloJo's record. Here are some results from it:
Willie Banks 18.20 (+5.2)
Charles Simpkins 17.92 (+5.2)
Robert Cannon 17.63 (+4.3)
Mike Conley 17.62 (+3.3)
Al Joyner 17.58 (+5.2)
Kenny Harrison 17.56 (+4.9)
Ray Kimble 17.53 (+4.8)
Ancillary marks include one with +4.9 and a number with no wind indicated.
Wow. Look who didn't make the team in 1988.
Mike Conley - 1992 Olympic Champ
Al Joyner - 1984 Olympic Champ
Kenny Harrison - 1996 Olympic Champ

FloJo was alot more muscular during her record year then earlier in her career. ...
While there is no hard evidence she was a PED user there is a ton of circumstantial evidence.
To me this one is like the Barry Bonds case. No hard evidence but you just sort of know the person is very likley guilty.

Look at the video in the second link. The first runner to congratulate her after the race actually looks more buff than she does.
There is hard evidence, her trainer, Robinson, confessed he gave her drugs
You are so racist.
Very interesting original article and story altogether.
21.34 is almost equally sick, in my opinion. Isn't it superior to her non-10.49 100 times?
Wejo is such a white racist just like Rojo.

Shelly Ann is clean. HIGHLY clean. You're just libelous and stupid. And if you weren't an insignificant nobody she could sue you for libel.
LOL. Testimony is not "hard evidence".
With all due respect, the video with Frank Shorter calling the race shows theofficial holding a white flag and for at least 10 seconds until the gun this flagwas blowing from the runner's left, definitely across the track. Granted, thewinds were swirling all day and 2 other runners also lowered their PBs butif the wind was measured at 0-0 and the wind can be seen blowing across the track at the start, it seems to me this WR is legitimate. Of course, thecontroversy arises because it lowers the previous WR by .27, but that dayshe also broke the old record by quite a margin in a time no one bothers to challenge. I think the Association of Track and Field Statisticians woulddearly love to throw out this 10.49 but they must have reviewed the videoat length and decided in all fairness that they couldn't throw it out.

There is not debate here really.
I was at track side , there was a tail wind , we all looked at each other when mentioned it was "legal non wind aided" , there was wind gusting all day.
Flojo's body changed , there is no question from people in the sport at that time she was on something.
Early retirement was a deal done as not expose her drug use. She was good for TV and sponsors of the sport.
She stood to make big $$ by staying around another couple of years , but smartly took the option to keep her money , records and medals in tact.

While she was probably doped your observation is dumb.
Fatima Whitbread gives me nightmares. It' a man I tell you. A man.
While she was watching the Pre with me this year, my wife was absolutely convinced that Jeter was transgendered.
