1. Learn to race and be attentive to the space around you. If you can't then be a time trialing rail hugger.
2. This is why racing with some frequency helps. The more experience you have the faster you learn to race better.
3. No special rules for people who can't race well or get unlucky. It's tough luck and try again in 4 years. I don't want a stumbling and jittery headcase on the Olympic team if she couldn't finish top 3 in the US trials.
Can people stop criticizing Mu who was somehow smart enought and good enough at racing to win the Olympic 800 gold with limited experience? SHe's not "a jittery headcase". SHe's the goddman Olympic champion who has been injured. If she was healthy no way she'd be running in that pack.
Agreed! First time I have ever solidly supported one of your posts. The negative reaction and some posters salivating in joy because they think Mu got her comeuppance is so unhinged.
The irony is her fashion career happened because she got famous through track.
You people sound sad and jealous because she has a life or wants a life outside of track. Such a weird way for you people to live.
LOL you sound sad and jealous because your pre-race favorite, yes the one NBC had sitting in a THRONE in the little video clip fell on her face and looks like a clown.
Based on the video there should be NO re-run and if anything she should be DQ'd for impeding the other runners.
The race was run, the results are in. She will get PLENTY of TV time during the Games, probably even more than if she actually ran.
Please remember that THERE IS NO OLYMPIC RULE saying selection must be top three at national championships - that's something the US have decided for themselves - for historical reasons that are probably interesting and deserves their own thread.
Some countries do not use top three. Some countries go by which athlete stands the best chance of medalling. Which of the 3 entrants will most likely be on the podium?
We have a brutally fair system that takes the top 3 from the day that matters. There are no passes because somebody got injured and isn't fit enough to front run like they normally do. The defending World Champion does get a pass for WC, but not Olympics. She is a great runner and it is too bad she won't get the opportunity to race in the Olympics. But realistically, she has never learned to race in a pack and showed that here by making a sudden side move and clipping the runner behind her. There was no reason to make this move. It was poor tactics and she is to blame. Good luck to her next time.
All this whining about "my favorite person didn't win! Re-run the race!" is what you expect out of an elementary school student, not adults. The rules are fair and were followed. The top 3 are the team.
I get this, and I like the fairness aspect of it but I think people are probably more concerned that it sometimes means the best team doesn't always get selected. This is specifically for the distance events from 800 upwards. In the sprints, the top 3 at the US trials are likely to have at least one, probably multiple medallists at the Olympics. In the distance events, the US has so few genuine medal contenders that if one misses out due to a fall or something similar, then the three that make the team probably won't replace that medal. Realistically, do you think Akins, Wilson, or Whittaker are going to medal in Paris? The odds are low. How many distance medals will the US win now? Hocker and Nuguse have good shots, then there's a few outsiders who will need a lot to go right for them (Fisher, St Pierre, Hoppel). I doubt any will win gold. Mu was almost nailed on for a medal and probably gold.

She has a lot of front running experience and she was clearly fitter and fast enough to do it through 2022 WC. She has acknowledged she gets nervous when she's not on the rail. She also acknowledged the pressure of her quick rise weighed on her and that it's so much harder to stay at the top than to get there. So I am not making up concerns about her anxiety. That is apparently why her coach keeps her from racing - to create a safe mental space for her and shield her from dealing with the pressures of racing more than she has to. Similar for Sydney who at least shows up in full blown execution/killer mode when she does race, so this system seems to work for her.
I am allowed to criticize because her lack of tactical experience and focus will probably not only cost the US a sure medal (from her) but also prevented arguably the next best 2 US runners from competing in Paris. Better to be honest and own up to mistakes than to rush to soothe egos which won't help Mu at all.

I would need to see Mu race more to make a more reasonable guess. Basing medal probability on historical times alone is not prudent.

Where in any of my posts am I calling for a rerun? The overwhelming favourite did not qualify for the Olympics as can happen and will continue to happen. Is there a need for the toxic remarks and joyous celebrations of her misfortune? You people need to get some perspective.

Unfortunately that may happen. It's going to be unfair to the runners who earned it by putting themselves in less risky positions in the race, and executing to place top 3. But NBC invested in the brightest T&F star thing so we will be hearing about her in Paris.
I initially thought Mu was really shy but if that NBC pre-race clip had any truth behind it Mu really does seem to love the attention (at least on the modelling/fashionista idea) she's getting. That attention is a double edged sword and most athletes would love to be in her position. You can't have it all and the high expectations are a normal part of the game.
This one you could make a case for a rerun because of the other athletes affected, the last clause you quoted would appear to allow for that without a DQ.
Oh yeah because the top 3 who legitimately made the team will go for that just because a runner couldn’t stay on her feet and wasn’t guaranteed a spot anyway
