But why wait until 400m to go? Going back to indoors, she has closed out some 5k’s with some decently fast 1600’s (without checking.)
I don't disagree, to a point. I'm not sure she could win a 1600 race against this level of competition if the first 3400 is too slow either.
I think her objective and strategy is fairly straightforward in the prelim. Make sure there aren’t more than five (including herself) in contention with 2000m-1600m to go. There are no bragging rights for winning the prelim. And if she gets the benefit of being in the last heat, she will have an idea on what time is required to get the little q’s.
Well, you need to consider that on the World Stage, the Americans are a minute or two slower than the East Africans in the 10000m, and it took Monson two or three years at altitude to get her 10000m time close to 30min. Kelati has been at altitude for at least six years, with a 10000m PB of 30:33.
Realistically, if Valby makes it to Paris, I’m interested to see what she can run with faster women pulling her along, and how she stacks up against the contemporary Scot, Megan Keith, the Finn Nathalie Blomqvist, the Aussie Lauren Ryan, etc.
I also want you to consider the cultural, economic and training conditions that Westerners are faced with compared to the Ethiopians. The best young US distance athletes are toiling around in the NCAA, while the Ethiopians are sending teams of well-coached teenagers simply living at 7000ft, and going up sometimes weekly to 10000ft to train, in ideal weather.
Not to mention the EPO, steroids, HGH and whatever else the EPOpians are on, with no fear of testing whatsoever.
Like Tuohy, she's back in training following injury rehab but has not revealed anything to the public regarding her fitness.
Mentioned this on the "US Women's Distance Lists" thread: there could be some sandbagging going on here.
Josette -- and Katelyn -- could be in far better shape than anyone outside their inner circles might imagine.
Prefer the "Power of Positive Thinking" approach. Makes for more exciting race-day possibilities.
Being in 100% physical shape is one thing. Races are won by being in top mental shape. Andrews is a head case with little confidence in strategic races. And now that she’s been injured and out of the loop since the winter it will take a lot more than speed work on the track to make the team. That’s what will be her downfall if she doesn’t pull it together
And she should be able to shave a little time off that closing lap if she’s chasing, or being chased, as opposed to running by herself and lapping people.
It’ll be interesting to see who is in which heat, etc. Example: Just by chance, might all the favorites be in the same heat and some don’t make it to the final?
I certainly doubt they’ll out Valby, ESP, Cranny and Schweizer all in the same heat
Given there are no more "q" s for the distance races, top-8 in each semi advance to finals.
Even if the semis wind up being unbalanced, fully expect all the contenders to finish in their respective top-8s and move on.
It looks like Buchalski, Donaghu, ESP, Andrews and Appleton ate all trying to do the 1500m / 5k double. No idea if some of those will end up qualifying for a trials slot in the 1500m though.
Some pretty confident talk yesterday (6/18) from Ritz & Josette regarding her Trials racing:
Temps in low-mid 80s for Friday's early evening semis, so expecting winning heat times around 15:30 -- unless Valby gets antsy and takes off. If that happens, wouldn't be surprised if the field lets her go and just compete for the other seven advancing spots.
If OAC isn't blowing smoke and Josette is in reasonable shape, she should easily advance to Monday's finals.
It will have zero affect on her 5000m. It makes sense to try to double. If she doesn't make the 5K team, she has the 1500 as a backup. No chance she'll make the 1500 team but she has nothing to lose and probably just enjoys racing. Maybe a PR, who knows?
June 21 - 5000 prelim
June 24 - 5000 final
June 27 - 1500 prelim
Exactly. Andrews should go for it if she is fit.

All talk.
All talk but what she said is lame. Her “edge” is to want to be on the Olympic team. Most runners are there because they want to be on the team and that’s their goal. Sorry but she has no edge
OAC's Josette Andrews has returned from an early season injury and is preparing for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials with one of her final hard wor...
Andrews joins the thread to promote herself in a last ditch effort with a narcissistic video.
I find these types of videos to be pointless and self indulgent as they scream “oh look at me!” Runners who are confident and focused dont have to resort to showing the world how fit they are. because frankly no one cares. Just freaking run a race!! And putting on dark sunglasses as you run a couple of strides on camera isn’t exactly intimidating. A huge indication that she needs a video to prove herself to others instead of being confident in her own skin. It’s also very narcissistic.

you my friend are dumb. being filmed by a 3rd party youtube channel is not narcissistic.

Triggered much? Why so defensive. We all know why 🤣

I think they offered a pretty sound rebuttal, doesn’t seem triggered to me. I agree; these athletes rely upon marketing themselves as sports figures in order to generate revenue. There’s nothing narcissistic about that, it is quite literally their job.
