Guilderland girls win Loucks games by 43 points over next closest team. Man they have been crushing it these last two years (not just distance). One of the top 3-5 teams in the history of New York State girls T&F. The Rush-Henrietta teams of 2015-2017 and Shen 2018 might have been a bit better but not by much.
The young talent in NY is legit right now. Sykes 9:05, Isenovski 9:09, Thibault 9:12, Tuohy 9:13 all in the same race...three sophomores and a freshman. Plus Cherry 4:19 in the mile with a 9:19 already this season. Crazy how Ryan Tuohy is completely living up to his billing so far and he's only the fourth or fifth best underclassman in the state.
Kevin - I appreciate that post about Sykes and the advice. Ironically, Ryan is one of my athletes, and my high school coach was none other than Tim Dearie when I ran for Northport in the 90’s. I thought you might appreciate the connection.
Wow! What an awesome story.
Would love to connect with you, coach. My email is
Also, The Observer newspaper in Northport (which loves to cover track) may want to reach out to do a story (my first job after college was working for Ambro…)
Anyone who was at the Section One Qual, can you confirm or refute this...
Based on the results & splits of the Boys 3200m, it looks like their might have been a nasty "crash" early that took out 4 of the top 5 seeds. Tuohy (NR) DNF with only one lap complete, Schutzbank (Nyack) DNF with no splits, and Sykes (HG) & Green (Arl) ran side-by-side 85's after Lap 1 for a pair of nearly identical 11:07's, DFL.

Was anyone there?
I was there. This is correct. Green and Sykes tempoed together and were chatting the whole time, coming in last, obviously. They were just goofing off and having a good time. Tuohy just had some fun and dropped out right after the first lap (which was a 75), fist bumping his coach after finishing. Schutzbank ran the 8 earlier, so he jogged 100m and dropped out.
So, to answer your question, there was no “crash.” None of them took it seriously because they all already had the super standard.
Can someone explain what the super standard is to me like I'm an idiot?
It’s a time that you try to hit anytime throughout the season or during the state qualifier so that no matter your place or time at the state qualifier, you will be going to the state meet. So a lot of guys with the super standard will jog the state qualifier or DNF so that other guys can have a chance to win the race and advance to the state meet. All you have to do is start the race at the qualifier if you have the super standard- you don’t need to finish or do remotely well. Out of Section 1 D1 alone, I believe 5 (and almost 6) boys advanced for the 3200. 3 advanced from the same event in Section 1 D2, so some great representation there.

How and when during the season is that qualifying time determined?

I’m not sure how it’s determined, but the standards are published during the early stages of the season. Here they are:
