Our team was fortunate enough to attend the NCAA regionals this year and watch some great female runners.
Katelyn Tuohy was very kind after her race and took time to have her picture taken with a young group of runners that look up to her. She is a great role model and the time she spent with our team meant the world to a bunch of young runners.
Our sport is great because even our best runners give back to young runners. Why there are so many posts tearing down Valby and Tuohy is ridiculous. They train hard and they compete hard but they do it with a great respect for one another. Competition is a good thing and it elevates runners to being the best they can be. This should be celebrated!!
Congrats to Tuohy. She is fulfilling a dream and giving herself a shot.
Am I the only one though that is not crazy about her staying in Raleigh to train with Henes? For one, altitude. A few altitude stints is not the same as moving there. Plus she is just going to be around school still, not in a pro environment.
Tuohy said 'if it's not broke .. ' but things have not gone great for her individually lately and Henes has not shown success with other pros on her roster (Steelman, Hays etc).
Henes also shed light on her training saying that she mostly just trained with the team. What are they going to do differently now?
Steelman set a new PB in every event she ran last year (1500, 3k, 5k). Hays has literally just run her 2nd post-collegiate race in a half-marathon where she got 2nd and beat Natosha Rodgers. They were both 15:30 runners in college, i'd have to ask where you set your expectations for their pro careers if that is unsuccessful.
That is good she is improving but doesn't really disprove my point. Steelman has been training at altitude now for 2(?) Years and has improved from 15:30 to 15:26in the outdoor 5k - 4s. Yes PR's, but meaningful? I heard she might have been dealing with injuries, but otherwise not great results for a pro who has moved to altitude. No offense to her... but 15:26 is not competitive even in the US.
Re Hays that result is not on world athletics so I missed that but good for her... maybe she will target the marathon.

She was still competing for NC State in June of 2022 so i'm pretty sure its not 2 years, probably since last fall or so.
She's had one season as a pro and improved her 1500 by 4 seconds, her 3k by 11 seconds and her 5k by 4 seconds. But again that wasn't even my point. My point was where are you setting your expectations for these athletes? She was a 9:05/15:30 athlete in college. Altitude isn't some magic pill that can drop everyone to sub 15 and being competitive at US nationals.
I like Aaron Rodgers but thousands of people can't stand him. Do you scold all of those people? I don't because I don't expect every sports fan to like every athlete. There is an odd defense of Tuohy. I stopped liking her after her 1500 prelim when she got annoyed with the announcer. She made it easy to like her even less after not starting the 5000 and then sitting through a press conference with her main competitors, while being sick.
Here we go again…a totally obnoxious, zero value-added post. Also lacking in courage to post under registered name.
Congrats to Tuohy. She is fulfilling a dream and giving herself a shot.

I have to imagine this is just to get her through the Olympic year in order to minimize drastic life changes and adapting to a new training group. I'd be shocked if she sticks around Raleigh after next summer.
Wow, this thread is a minefield. My post defending KT for going to NC State gets deleted for being "low/no content post"... wouldn't be surprised if this one gets deleted too.
I don't particularly like the opinions of the LRC basement dwellers, but I respect their right to share their opinions on here. How about the rest of us?

I get that... But Compare her improvement to Elly Henes who has been training under coach Smith. She ran 15:03 PR within like 7 months and kept going.
My point was just an observation that Steelman has not improved that much as a pro under Henes, despite the benefits of altitude. I don't see 4 seconds off 15:30 as a big improvement, doesn't need to be sub 15 or even sub 15:10...
Would it be a great result for Tuohy if she only drops 4 seconds in the next year off her already (much faster) PR with her goals of making teams? Most would say no.
Hopefully Steelman will continue to improve and Tuohy will as well.

An 8:54 3k indoors after only a few months at altitude is worth 15:20 on the IAAF tables. Looking at her other results this past May and Summer i think it was just a bad season, maybe some injuries.
But either way, i dont think 1 season of Steelman's career and 2 races of Hays career is nearly enough to say that Henes can't coach pro athletes.
She already ran a 15:03 on a standard 400m track after she had started to wear down last year. So hardly a difficult extrapolation. When she won XC and in January and February she was in sub-15 shape.
