No top distance athletes should ever go to a school where the Director is not the distance coach. Otherwise you’re wasting your time.
Vanhoy did alright in the distance events at Ole Miss while having a throws coach as the Director.
I think the remark was if you’re a top distance runner. Cherry picking one program that had mildly good success is not the point. If you’re a blue chip and looking for a top school you’re not going to pick a school with a sprint coach as director . The entire staff and their jobs rely on the director’s position and no way the distance coach can put a decent amount of money to distance men and women if they are not in charge!
Edrick is not a distance guy, but he IS a distance guy. Don't forget, his college Head Coach was John McDonnell!!!
He was teammates with Joe Falcon and the rest of the Arkansas distance crew. He knows first hand the value of a well run and coached distance squad, and what their national point production can be.
I know of at least one former distance coach that would disagree with this statement... Don't outshine your boss.
Fair enough, but we can agree THAT situation was never going to be one where Edrick could build a monster sprint/hurdle group or even a jumps group. Distance is and always will be king in that program, and everything else is supplemental, and for many years that was the Throws program at that particular University. That was also his first stop as a HC, where he cut his teeth.

Holy discredit. Mildly good success? That’s what a podium in XC and 3 national titles in 9 years is to you? In that same span there were MAYBE 5-7 coaches outperforming that.

You are cherry picking one team. How often dose a non distance director team make the podium. Almost never!

Exactly and why do you think he left OM to Cal Poly? So he can make the decisions for everything and not be second fiddle
Yes!!! Some of us come on here to learn about job openings. Others come on here to slander/trash talk hires and removals. Which is unfortunate. We might be one of the only coaching communities that continue to bash each other and hide behind screens! Be happy for people and also have empathy/sympathy for each other. We are in a profession where a lot of us don’t do it for the money. People that get forced to retire or let go still have lives to live, bills to pay and stomachs to feed!!!
All the best to those looking for jobs! For you younger or new to coaching stay motivated and get mentors so that you don’t base your opinion off of everything you read in this blog!
#TrackIsBack have a great season everyone!!!
I agree! What you say on here about someone could affect their career and their reputation. Let's talk about openings and positive news about our sport and coaching jobs. To come on here and bash someone is wrong and does nothing for our profession.
