Aouita had the greater range but he won no titles over 800, 1500 or 10k. He also never broke the mile WR and won only a single Olympic medal (albeit gold).
Really dumb to believe Jakob has hit his peak just because he didn't improve his 1500m time in a year when he doubled at two major championships and there was no Monaco 1500m.
Will run sub 3:28 at Monaco next year for sure.
Agree he surely has a 3:27 in him unless he concentrates on the 5,000
Of course I'm a bit bias given my LRC handle, BUT, are you seriously saying that Rudisha's career was more impressive than Aouita's? Mulitple WR's at various distances, Oly Champ, World Champ, and a career that spanned from 1983-1989 at the highest level. The dude ran 1:43 in 1988 near the END of his career.
Wake up dude! You need to be better than that.
It's clearly a matter of preference, but Rudisha has twice as many olympic golds and twice as many WC golds as Aouita. Aouita only competed indoors in 1989, so had 5 legit years, just like Rudisha. And 1:43.86 is nice, but 1:40.91 is much nicer :)
Pretty sure nobody is arguing Aouita was the superior 800m runner.
But he clearly could beat Rudisha at every distance from 1500m on up

Sure, but in a general discussion of “Who was the greater athlete?” I for one vote Rudisha based on his being the greatest 800 runner in history. By the same token I’d put Wilson Kipketer and Joaquim Cruz above Augustine Choge (obviously), and Johnny Gray above Alan Webb.
The people who think Jakob has peaked in the 1500 because he didn't PB this year must be the same ones who thought Cole Hocker was maxed out when he was closing 3:35 races in 52. I don't understand the complete inability to look beyond mere finishing times and consider the circumstances of a race, season, etc.
Jakob has improved substantially from last year. Prior to this season, he had never consistently dominated or been the clear number 1 in the world. He's joined Tim as the only other man capable of pushing sub-3:30 for the win once the pacers have dropped. In a year with two hard championship doubles, he's still managed multiple fast times in races he won convincingly. Compare his Zurich races the last two years and tell me he hasn't leveled up.
With just one championships next year, expect a greater emphasis on fast times. We probably wouldn't even be having this discussion if the pace lights in Lausanne had been set correctly, but it won't matter when he runs 3:27 in Monaco next season.
Jakob dominated this year because he was very solid second best in 2020 and 2021. In 2022, Tim C is now a 3:30 runner at best.
I don’t think Jakob could’ve PRed this year but I do agree with everything else.
I’m not sure he beats Wightman next year either, and I definitely vote against him in a championship with no rabbits.

1988 800m bronze.
This is the same Aouita who reportedly urged Australian athletes he was training to dope? His performances are about as credible as those of Kiprop.
El G's mile WR is 23 years old now. In the 23 years prior to 1999, the mile WR was broken 7 times. In the 23 years prior to that, it was broken 11 times. Something is off about that.
24 for the 1500m.
It's only a matter of time that this distance will be brought to the right place.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a huge Rudisha fan, but he had zero range. Don't forget, Aouita was one of the first, if not the first to push his limits in other events. A range from 800m to 10,000m is unbelievable.

I'm going with:
Oly Gold-5000
Oly Bronze-800
WC Gold-5000
WC Gold-3000 indoors
WC Bronze-1500
WR-1500
WR-2000
WR-3000
WR-5000 x 2 (1st sub 13:00)
Look at your username. This is as surprising as if Coevett said Coe and Ovett should have statues put up and that it should be mandatory for Brits to kneel before them.
