One of Southlake Carroll alums (Antonio Florcruz) goes to University of Oklahoma. He’s been on varsity for Southlake Carroll since SOPHOMORE YEAR. The truth hurts, man.
As a proud OU alum, no distance runner should go there on the men’s side right now. OU is not a place where you can have a well balanced team across all event groups. They have some great sprints/ field athletes, but men’s distance is DEAD. Women’s team is steadily improving back to where they were in high school though.
Sydney Sundgren (2:16/4:49/10:21), the top runner for the number one team in the country, is headed to Cal Poly. But dont cry for Buchanan, the talent they have in the pipeline is enviable.
4 years later, this guy chooses a school where, 4 years ago, he looked like he should have went to based on his height.
Also, why isn’t this school getting more national caliber talent on the GUYS side? How is their coaching? (Compared to Mike Smith, Wetmore, Henes, etc.)
Is this program EVER gonna be achieving what their girls program is achieving now? Seems like this school and New Mexico are some of the only schools where only 1 xc team is in contention for a national title while the other one is not.

Buchanan’s record of success in CIF is undeniable. However, their record for athletes (both genders) succeeding in college is abysmal. Meat grinder program run by coaches with large egos like Great Oak, Saugus, and others before them. Kids leave program mentally and physically exhausted after practicing 50 weeks per year. They start XC practice before track season is even over.

It starts early in the district. A lot of emphasis on running/racing in elementary school. Some of the Elementary schools are introducing the fun of running/participating while there are some running the kids 4 miles at practice-in 4th grade-4 days a week plus a race. Very competitive at early ages. The middle school kids practice during the summer with the high school kids. A lot of miles. A lot of pressure.
