Are "flat-earthers" an actual thing?

And as a follow up to this question...what would happen if scientists found a way to drill downward at the bottom of the marianas trench? Would all of the world's sea water drain out into space?

Here's what you people are doing by replying to this thread:

1. Flat Earth Troll trolls for people that will argue with him, thinking he is serious about the Earth being flat (he is good, and a lot of you are stupid, so you WILL go to great lengths to "prove" Earth is round to him).

2. Flat Earth Troll delights in their efforts and discounts it with on-the-ready cut-and paste text, videos, diagrams, etc. refuting their claim. This troll works particularly well because there is lots of ready-made material like this to aid in the troll.

3. This enrages/frustrates easily-trolled people (which is the goal of trolling). They argue with Flat Earth Troll. He insists he is "not a troll, you people are sheep who believe what the government tells you, and here's some proof Earth is flat." Easily-trolled people scour the internet for counter-proof that the Earth is round (which Flat Earth Troll knows, but that is beside the point). This is exactly what Flat Earth Troll wants you to do. He knows the Earth is round. You are being stupid.(repeat step 2).

4. Although some understand it as a troll, many do not and can't resist, as he seems to be good at the troll, coupled with the fact that many people are apparently stupid and don't see it as what it is: a never ending, never resolved argument that is the very essence of a troll.

5. Thread disappears for a few months. Flat Earth Troll resurrects it, often by pretending to be someone who wants to argue with Flat Earth Troll. (repeat step 1).

Addendum: Although I have pointed out what this thread is all about in plain English, Flat Earth Troll will still, incredibly, be able to bury the post and continue making stupid people engage in the never-ending argument (see above posts).

Here's what I found by reading your link: "Copernicus was aware that the ancient Greek Aristarchus had already proposed a heliocentric theory, and cited him as a proponent of it" So Copernicus resurrected an ancient idea already known 2300 years ago in Ancient Greece, and it was known among Islamic astronomers about 1000 years ago. We shouldn't really be surprised by flat-earthers. When a large number of Americans think some magical human died and was resurrected 2000 years ago, it shows people will believe pretty much anything.

The difference is, I can't take a telescope to Israel and prove Jesus didn't rise from the dead. But I can take a telescope to the beach and prove the Earth is an ellipsoid. So, Flat-Earthers are just slightly more stupid than many Americans.

Who knows, the furthest any human has drilled is 12 km into the Earth, so your guess is as good as mine. Falt earthers don't claim to have all the answers, but the Earth is flat and that much is obvious.

I have done it at the Thames estuary with my Nikon P900, brings those boats straight back once out of sight. I could even see the writing on the side of the boats hull. Perspective is a wonderful thing.

I've done it.

The boat you were looking at obviously wasn't far enough away, especially if you could still read the writing on the side of the boat's hull. I didn't capture video of my personal experience, but here is a guy that did. The most relevant part of the video is from 2:06-2:26.

You can clearly see the ship isn't getting too far away to view. It's actually being blocked by the curvature of the Earth, slowly from the base to the top, until it is out of view. Explain that one big man.

I don't think you can explain the ship slowly disappearing from bottom to top on the power of your telescope. You can explain a ship going out of the range of your human eye, and then using a telescope to bring it back into range. My guess is he'll claim the time lapse video has been faked. This is a fun game for me. I know the flat earthers are either just trolling or complete utter dipsh!ts.

Um, Rayo, heliocentricity basically stomped on every remaining notion of a flat Earth with the ‘heavens above’. Geocentricity had already put the Earth in space as opposed to being the base of all existence by making the heavens as a sphere rotating around the Earth instead of moving around ‘above’ the Earth. This on it’s own was counter to everything people believed about the known universe and the essential basis of this thread. Evolving study and understanding of the motions of the stars and planets brought the heliocentric theory which placed the Earth and the planets in orbit around the Sun. Mainly this is due to retrograde motions of planets in their apparent positions relative to the stars over the course of time as the planets rotate around the Sun.

However, the changes brought forth by both geocentricity and heliocentricity created a coordinate system that provides a means of location for items in sky, the celestial coordinate system based on right ascension and declination.

No he used it to support that the "globe earth" idea is only 500 years old, despite both the heliocentric (his source) and spherical (my source) wikipedia entries giving credit to the ancient Greek scholars more than 2000 years ago, and to Islamic astronomers around 1000 years ago, well before Western civilization caught up. The flat earth idea was never really seriously proposed in any scholarly circles, and the popularity now is just indicative to the increasing number of people in the fringes, who have developed the capability to write blogs and produce youtube videos to communicate with each other, when in previous eras, they would be in isolation.

Wouldn't it be easier to drill through a flat earth?

Actually doing visual line of sight experiments over water are a bad idea, unless you account for atmospheric refraction, as clear days, and the temperature difference of the water and air, often produce atmospheric conditions that "flatten" what you can see. Do the mountain experiment over a plain, and measure the viewing angle from the mountaintop to the horizon. If the radius of the earth is infinite (i.e. the earth is flat), this will show up in the downward angle, to your law of perspective vanishing point, as 0 degrees offset from the horizon plane. B.o.B. tweeted pictures on top of a mountain, looking for a side to see curvature between two cities (not understanding that a globe model predicts left to right flatness, because all the points from left to right, for 360 deg., are the same distance away from the viewer, and it is the distance from the view which limits his view) -- B.o.B could easily have done this angular measurement, that Islamic scholars did 1000 years earlier, to get a fairly accurate estimate of the radius of the earth below him. Or, if you can't do it in practice, lacking a convenient mountain and a plain, do it first in theory, and just do the math. Do the math for a flat earth and again for a globe earth. Every high school math student knows the math Biruni used 1000 years ago to estimate the radius of the earth at 6339.6 km, so we have all the numbers we need. We know what the numbers would be on a globe earth model, for mountains of 10000ft or 3000m, or a plane at 30000ft, or GoPro camera in a balloon at 100000 - 140000ft. How high would mountains have to be on a flat earth to produce the same angle from the horizon plane, between mountain top and horizon? Here's another experiment rapper B.oB. could have done with two more viewers. Have him stand on the mountain, the second viewer in one city, and the third viewer in the other, 16km away. Can they both see him? Can they both see each other? Why or why not?
