"Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah, another Republican who voted alongside all 50 Senate Democrats to convict Trump, also denounced the RNC's resolution, calling it shameful.
"Shame falls on a party that would censure persons of conscience, who seek truth in the face of vitriol," Romney tweeted Friday. "Honor attaches to Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger for seeking truth even when doing so comes at great personal cost.""
True
The reason the RNC is defending the insurrection is that they helped hand-pick the fake electors.
Elected Republicans are trapped. Of course they put themselves in this trap but there is no good way out for them. Many Republicans are so emmeshed into the seditious plot to overturn the election by any means that they have no alternative but to fight the reveal of truth no matter how it looks.
Other Republicans are trapped by Trump's devoted cult following. Even if they weren't involved in any seditious behavior to overturn an election, if they don't support Trump they might lose primaries and funding and also would have to withstand the attacks for disloyalty.
Pence was cornered and had no choice but to say Trump was wrong. This gave an opening for Mitch to try and redirect the party away from the Trumpian march into oblivion. Mitch is playing the long game and made a smart gambit. He said what he knows many Republicans want to say but are too fearful. Will it start a movement away from Trump? I don't know because the cult members do what cult members do. They worship their lord and master regardless of facts or the cost to themselves.
Mitch tried this before right after the Jan. 6th attack and failed. He had to pull back that feeler testing a veer away from Trump. He is trying again.
