Not a chance. They simply would say it wasn't Trump's fault.
And by the way: Not all the GOPers are cynics like Cruz and Hawley: intelligent and educated people who know better, but are willing to do anything to win future elections. Some of the GOP Congresspeople are completely sincere True Believers™.

mostly they just think this is how politics works...if you want tax cuts and more guns and more carbon in the atmosphere, you have to support the politicians who get that to you. They think it's just a game to get to what you want. So Mitch sees no problem voting to acquit and then immediately saying Trump was in fact guilty. trump got mitch his tax cuts and tried to take away health care, so voting to acquit a person you know is guilty...is just part of the game.
Dems have higher ethical standards, but not much, much higher.

Whacko. Rhymes with jacko. You guys couldn't impeach a pig in a flymo.

Enjoy your loss, tripe hound.
Stupid post, mosh. The Democrats did impeach Trump, that was the House vote. Insufficient Republicans were willing to convict, although a majority of the Senate did vote that Trump is guilty.
So, it was unsuccessful as an exercise in convicting Trump. Was it humiliating? No, the end result in the Senate was entirely predictable and expected. In fact, getting 7 GOP votes is a measure of success in this excessively partisan time. But the real point was to lay out Trump's perfidy, mendacity, and dereliction of duty for the country and for the record. In that sense, their efforts weren't perfect but they were pretty good. Of course, they can share the credit with Trump who gave them some good material with which to work.
You're splitting hairs and being vituperous, SeaTac. The Senate trial was a vindication not just of Trump personally, but of everything Trumpism (MAGFO) stood for. We cannot be denied or canceled. Our love of freedom and America is too strong for you people.
This was a sea change, a tide turning event. I'm reminded of Hunter Thompson's words at the end of Fear and Loathing - "the wave speech."
"So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark—that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back."

Nope. This was almost a foregone conclusion--Republicans are too craven to admit their guy was a complete and utter loser. Like you Gary.
Trump is now utterly powerless, except maybe among his base and they'll hang on every word. He's going to face lawsuits and criminal investigations and trials for years to come. And you chumps won't be winning major elections for some time to come.
You lost the election. 7 million popular votes and 74 electoral. Lost the Senate.
You lost in November. You lost all the court cases that followed. You lost on January 6. Lost yet again on January 20. You lose. You lose. You lose.

bang that's just stupid.
57 senators voted to convict, including a historically unprecedented 7 of his own party.
The senators voting to convict represent something like 65% of the nation's population.
afterwards the senate leader of the Rs said Trump was actually guilty despite the acuital.
Nikki Haley said that the Rs were wrong to follow trump.
In the end trump took the party from having WH, House, Senate to having none of that.
he lost by 7 million votes and is the first one-term president since 1992, almost 30 years.
one termer.
Now we can focus on the other crimes

Trump acquitted. Suck it, libs.
Pelosi goes home devastated!
Pelosi already dragged Trump out by his hair and little hands as promised ?
Trump and his fan boys accepted their loss without any meaningful resistance. Worst 1776 re-enactment ever.
ENJOY YOUR LOSS ??

Somehow this is winning?
It's political theater. Obviously the goal was never to convict. No way would enough Rs go along with it. The goal was always painting Trump in a bad light to prevent or hinder a run in 2024. McConnell knows this, hence his comments. Let Trump run in 2024, he won't make it through the primary.

But I'd say in response that the US has been through more difficult times than this, and without changing its constitution, fixed itself, more or less.
One reason that the US is such a stable and wealthy nation is that it is hard to change the structure of government. A president or senate cannot change the constitution on their own. The benefit of that is that the national political system is fixed in stone and we must work with each other to make it work. We can't say 'eh things are bad the other side will never work with us let's scrap it and start over.'
Yeah democracy is not working well right now here, but as usual it is working enough. We just voted out a popular populist authoritarian who was trying to steal an election and had an entire political party on his side.
Not many nations have done that. Nations usually fold instead, and the populist demagogue wins.
We need to get the legislative branch working. I'm hoping Biden will take steps to make that happen. Mitch is the problem tho. No idea how we get around Mitch while he's in office. He's a total menace.
You contradict your point with the Mitch example...
....but in most 1st World countries, most of those ranked above USA, the authoritarian would either have not been allowed to run nor been voted into power (given his previous indiscretions), and most certainly would not have lasted 4 yrs, let alone survive impeachment, and being allowed to run.
The constitution was great when it was written, it isn't any more and as time goes on, that will only get worse.
Anyway, the USA will not be the superpower for much longer (relatively), these things go in cycles, and then there will be change. Why wait?
McConnell is trying very hard to pivot the party away from Trump. As he speaks the money will follow. If Trump runs in 2024 the GOP machine will swallow him.

the US has a way of renewing itself, mostly from waves of immigration reinvigorating the nation and because of the sheer wealth of the place.
My view is that we will look back at this time and recognize that trump showed us the weaknesses of our system. Namely that the DOJ works under the command of the white house, that impeachmebt doesn't work, that congress has handed too much power to the executuve branch, that the electoral system supports minority rule, etc. I'm pretty sure that the country will work to mend some of these things. It won't be fast, though. Wounds will have to fade.

Agyp, the flaws in American democracy are none of those things. It's become clear in the internet age that the primary flaw with our system is the First Amendment - people of lower intelligence not only have opinions on matters of importance, but those opinions now (1) have a forum and (2) are given credence and weight. Their opinions are even encouraged now, as if that stupid phrase "everyone is entitled to an opinion" was actually true. In all seriousness, how can a nation make important decisions regarding how to provide for hordes of intellectually inferior people, when those same inferior people are now guiding the debate? Will China or Russia face such a problem? (No, they won't is the answer.)
America was born in part because people wanted a system where a ruling class, proven to be subject to greed and corruption, created certain inequalities and unfairness. That was all probably true to some extent, and a correction was needed, but is that sound policy anymore? A relatively benevolent ruling class making high level informed decisions free from, e.g., the loud and stupid voices of BLM or fans of Fox news, would be a blessing these days. American styled democracy will never get back to days of critical thought. And its our democracy that did that to us. And technology, I guess.

Gotta love how the extremely butthurt trump lovers are running in here now claiming victory. They absolutely salivate over anything that is even perceived to be a lib own, even if they are yelling victory from the depths of the abyss. Sad unamerican scum.
This was the most bipartisan conviction vote ever. The idea that they are simply going to purge out the RINOs without election consequences is pure nuttery. They will have to reconcile this split before they can win any majority back or the WH, and they wasted a great chance to do it at the trial vote. Mitch half heartedly tried to rally the trumpers to move and it didn’t work. He ended up voting with them and then publicly saying trump was guilty after. The base won’t be kind to those Rs on the fence who ultimately betrayed their orange hero. Maybe Mitch thinks it will be a slow divorce, but that won’t work in their favor and there is simply no time. He will retire before trump delivers a final blow to the GOP when he runs in 2024 and miserably fails with voters.
Trump lovers who think this was a victory are psychotic. You can’t bring your king back if the GOP is collapsing. Let’s see how creating his own party works out for him. Let’s see how yelling from his FL cave at the TV screen resonates with his base (no Twitter ?). Let’s see how continuing to foment violence will help him. You are all irretrievably lost and you deserve it.
As for Dems, they couldn’t be better positioned politically. Trump is crippled with no decision or governance power and is still controlling the GOP. We are going to enjoy some extra buttery popcorn as we watch him mangle the GOP some more and try to make it past a primary in a split party. The Dems have no interest in shutting trump down now that he’s gone. The GOP has to continue to own this clown. Good luck in your drowning ship. ??
Yes..Yes..Yes....Trump is acquitted in the Democrats shameless farce of a trial....
2 out of 2 not guilty verdicts...
Looking forward to impeaching Biden after the midterms when his corruption is revealed at Hunters trial...
