We toppled a dictator. A wonderful day.
If your idea of "toppling a dictator" is by voting him out, then he wasn't a dictator.
It took a lot more than votes to get the wannabe dictator out.
It took judges upholding their oaths and demanding actual evidence of election fraud.
It took election officials like the ones in Georgia who went against the president they voted for.
It took military leaders upholding their oaths who refused to go along with following the president over the constitution.
It took an attorney general who finally reached a line he wouldn't cross.
It took several Republican lawmakers upholding their oaths and rejecting lies about election fraud.
It took social media companies to finally recognize the president as a violent threat.
It took loyal troops to rid the capitol of vermin on January 6th.
We avoided dictatorship because so many individuals bravely refused to be ruled by a dictator.
Flagpole, you can say it one more time and actually be right this time.
Trump is done.

“See. I told you. I’m right again!!!”
actually it was Fat Hurts who didn't have 'trump leaves office after losing election' as an option.
Sorry Flagpole.

You're right. It took a major effort including voters and the judicial and legislative branches to prevent the dictator wannabe from getting his wish.
Good point.
I wonder what happens to the Q Anon followers now. Does that all dissipate quickly? Do they keep it alive with some new conspiracy, like Trump is still really in charge or some nonsense like that? Do they latch onto some new BS conspiracy?
I read that many of them were thinking there would be some Trump led military take over today because the military was there and all the "evil, satanic, Democrats" were there in the open for the taking.
What are the crazy Q people thinking now that Biden has been sworn in and Trump is out of the White House? Where do they go from here?
It's amazing that there are Q Anon followers in the US Congress ! Can you imagine living in their districts? I hope the CO. one gets indicted for sedition.

Yeah, but he didn't leave the presidency early.
Today if someone told me there's a God I'd instantly believe them. Even a better day that inauguration in 2008.
Good riddance to that conman.

Right. Seriously! I't s crazy that people believing that stuff was actually elected to Congress.

I expect a lot of the mainstream right wing pundits (e.g. Limbaugh) are probably happy to be back to criticizing "the leftists" in power without the burden of pretending the right wing hasn't obviously gone over the edge.
Without reinforcement by someone as prominent as Trump, I'd expect the more marginal stuff (Q Anon, overt white supremacy groups, etc) to fade back to the margins though perhaps not as much or as quickly as they ought.

I think the least extreme thing will be how it goes down. He will lose the election, and he will exit the White House without being forced to. He will then crow about how the military was behind him and he could have stayed in office if he wanted to, but being the good guy that he is, he honored the election ("even though it was rigged" he will say). He will do this in hopes that it is a point in his favor that keeps him out of prison.
I honestly can't believe how bad of a person he is, and I have a big imagination.

Of course there is still time for him to be thrown into prison or flee to exile. I've been saying for awhile that this might not happen immediately on January 20th. If he's not on his way to some foreign land very soon then you can bet it won't be long before prosecutors start knocking on his door.
All along it was a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy. Assuming Trump really is an authoritarian, he can't escape the authoritarian's fate. An authoritarian leader must break the law to do what he does. So either he stays in power until dead, or the law catches up with him, or he runs away.
I think what I said in the quoted post is fairly accurate. At the time I was expecting Trump to go down swinging right up until January 20th. And it almost happened. If the rioters on January 6th had been more successful then Trump might still be trying to cling to power today.
But the gist of my prediction should still come true. I fully expect Trump to either be in prison or living in exile relatively soon. Time will tell if my theory was correct.

There's a God.
And He loves you.
You guys asking for the thread title to be changed are misunderstanding the intent. It says "Official LRC President Donald J Trump".
We all know how right the site leans, correct?
Well, Trump is the LRC President in honorarium.
All Hail the chief!

Is there such a thing as presidential pardons in other democratic, developed countries? While I can see some cases of it doing good, it seems too open to abuse and gives the message that the president is above the law. I think they should get rid of them, not sure there is any desire for it though.
In other democratic, developed countries, pardon power belongs to the non-executive head of state. That would be the monarchs in UK, Japan and Canada (Governor General), and "President" in Germany and Italy (not their Chancellor or PM). Of course, their roles are ceremonial. They just rubber stamp the decisions made by non-political boards.
Executive President pardons in France. But the decision has to be cosigned by the Prime Minister and the Minister of Justice. And in reality, it's the career (non-political) people at the Ministry of Justice who make the decision.
You cannot get rid of pardon without a Constitutional amendment, but I think the Congress can pass a law to limit the presidential power. They might need a 2/3 majority because the President is likely to veto, and it may be challenged in the court after it is signed.
I don't know if we should get rid of it altogether. Cases like Cyntoia Brown do exist at the federal level as well, and if pardons are eliminated, we should have a different kind of remedy.

The ones who gave guided tour to the insurrectionists on the day before the attack will probably be indicted. There are security cameras everywhere in the Capitol, and it's not hard to identify who they were and what they did.

If that's what happened. I think we still don't know the details do we?

I have seen some Qanon posts and the new take is that they actually had to wait for Biden to be inaugurated before Trump could do anything. This is a pretty amazing way to adapt the conspiracy theory. They simultaneously needed to back off the whole "storm" thing because it was clear that anyone who showed up to the inauguration with ARs would get merked instantly by snipers. And Qanon already has one failed "storm" in their pocket and cannot afford another one. So, they just postpone with the logic that Trump has to wait for Biden to actually be in power before Trump can make his move and remove Biden from power. It is kind of like a standing requirement for a coup. So, the Qanon people are still sitting around waiting and thinking that Trump will make is move soon.
It is no coincidence that sites like Parler and 8chan are filled with people pitching MLM schemes.
