With that said.... wow. 2:01 is mind-numbingly shpeedy
If Bekele isn’t GOAT, then there is NO GOAT.
How can you not see that?!

i don't understand why so many in this forum keep saying the elites are taking ped. please don't throw me the articles you will find from googling "doping in east africa"
while doping might be rampant in the lower tiers, i think in the level of kam,kip and kb there is no way they would go undetected and anyway just look at how happy they look running they simply couldn't be doping.
anyway i think there recent onslaught of fast times is because of the shoes.
for all you know kip,kb are still 2.03 guys in better shoes.
This is the dumbest thing I’ve read on the internet this week.
Imagine if KB had taken the marathon WR.
Then he would have 5000, 10000 and marathon WR simultaneously !

Get out of here. You're one of the biggest clown's I've ever seen on this board. Bekele has been the GOAT for almost ten years now and his now legendary marathon comeback simply adds to his status. His incredible streak at world XC back when world XC was the most competitive distance race in the world, the 12:37 and 26:17, his legendary closes at world champs off of insanely fast paces, 53 second closes for sub 13, his 12:59 second half split to win the worlds 10k in 200(3?),
Bekele's overall career is much more impressive than anyone elses, including Kipchoge and Geb.
Awesome race by Bekele. I really hope for a marathon vs overall distance runner GOAT showdown at London? and/or Tokyo next year for the Olympic gold! A race for the ages between GOATs

But what about Mo?
Best marathoner in the current era. Remember the pioneers. Zatopek, Snell, Ryun, Prefontaine, Coe, Keino, and hundreds of others.
KB looked as thin/trim as I can recall in a long time.
That certainly aided his amazing time today. Not that he was ever out of shape obviously but he looked positively lean today.

Cyclists like clenbuterol, too.
I wonder what it would be like to have that kind of talent? I can't even imagine. Think about it - you're getting up in age, in your late 30s. You've had a bunch of injuries, put on some weight, maybe lost some of your motivation.
Then you decide to re-focus one more time. You train hard and do everything right for maybe 6 months and then go out and drop a 2:01:41 marathon! wtf - that's just ridiculous.

"Ridiculous" is an interesting choice of word.

Are you the guy that thinks everyone dopes? Or just black people? I can't remember.

Gobble Gobble MF to all the doubters. They must be feeling silly now. It feels good being right. I knew he could do it. He has come back even quicker than I expected. I was hoping for him to be possibly 2:03 and he smashed that. He literally destroyed the field. Well done Bekele. It is also a great day for me. Maybe people here will respect me more and won't think I'm a village idiot. This is the most excited I've ever been to post here. I can't wait to see gold in Tokyo next year.
I'm a little disappointed, I was expecting Banana Bread's lap of honour to be at least 4000 words...

What about him? Easy: Just a 5k-10k sit and kick guy who DOESN'T have a world record on his distance specialty. Never did anything special other than that, no cross country, and his marathon performances: a paltry 2:05.
That's about it for sir Mo. (Yes I spelled sir in lower caps just to piss you and all Brtis who kiss his rear off)

Presumably Kipchoge will run at Tokyo 2020. Do you think Bekele will? Or will he spend the next 12 months preparing for another assault on the WR at Berlin next year?

Assuming they are both healthy and fit, it would be by far the best match-up in marathon history and similar to Ali-Frazier (the first fight). If Bekele doesn't run in Tokyo it would be like Coe or Ovett skipping Moscow to focus on WR's in the 1500/Mile. The best competing against each other is what makes sports great. I would be disgusted if one them skipped Tokyo.

I agree. I hope he goes after the Olympics (assuming Ethiopian officials aren't stupid) rather than WR. The problem with WR attempts is the weather and any number of other things can go wrong. But if he beat's Kipchoge head to head at Olympics, even if conditions suck and its a slow time, it counts for more.

Happy to see Bekele return to his best. I hope both he and Kipchoge are fit and ready for the Olympic showdown next year. It is amazing that this rivalry is still a hot topic 16 years after the 2003 WC 5000 meters!

However, the IAAF should now make it mandatory that Kipchoge quit the draft-assisted nonsense and go head to head vs Bekele in a fast flat marathon to settle things for good and all.

I sure hope he goes for it, rather than running the Olympics. It would be the perfect chance.. get some of his training buddies to help pace, no Kipchoge at Berlin 2020 (potentially), and hopefully find another 5~10seconds.

A lot of good commentary above. The (obvious?) consensus is that Kipchoge is the marathon goat and Bekele is the overall goat.
I posted the following on another thread already but this one has more responses so I copy/pasted it here:
Can you imagine a Tokyo Olympic marathon with a (healthy 100%) Kipchoge VS Bekele matchup?!?! It would / will be unreal.
Two other thoughts:
- Outside of the Olympics I doubt we'll get another chance at that matchup.
- How much would Bekele have to do to become the marathon goat? Minimally: (1) beat Kipchoge in Tokyo, and (2) set the WR. But there would have to be some additional criteria.... perhaps:
(3) run a faster aided marathon time than whatever Kipchoge runs at Ineos159 (assuming Ineos159 yields a faster results than Breaking2)
(4) win a couple more fast marathons?
(5) win all the WMM?
for KB to overtake EK in the marathon I would say yea he has to beat EK head to head (anywhere. but tokyo does seem like the only plausible option) and take the WR from him. if he does those two things the conversation about Marathon GOAT starts to get interesting. both sides have a solid argument. but then if KB does either of the following i would say he is the marathon GOAT / 5k-marathon GOAT (in addition to already being the 5k-10k-XC GOAT):
1.) beats EK head to head a second time
2.) strings together at least 4 more major marathon wins over the course of 2-3 years (and IMO chicago and tokyo have less weight than london, berlin, boston, and nyc)
the sub2 attempts have little value in my mind when comparing two people, unless they have identical resumes and the sub2 attempt is the only difference. if KB beats EK 2 times then it doesn't matter if EK ran 1:57 on an aided course.
this is all assuming they are both healthy. Knock on wood - hopefully EK continues to have 0 injury issues (and hopefully KB has kicked his issues). but if KB starts to dominate in a frontier that has no EK b/c of injury.... that's tricky.
