Thanks, C/M! Well, I just took a look at the Cornell men's entries and they are obviously serious, with some doubling (esp. hurdles/flat races) and tripling that I did not expect. They have four or five men in every jumping event, and the hurdles as well. Notable Big Red absences: Bain from the 60, Stancil LJ, Winkler WT. If I counted correctly, Cornell has 29 men in individual events, leaving space for four fresh legs on the relays.
I haven't taken a similar count of the Princeton entries, but it's hard to feature that they have many unfilled slots: they've covered all the individual events (except weight) beautifully, including one or two sandbaggers (no previous mark this season). Based on the Tigers' entries and Cornell's absences, I would not bet against Princeton at this point; those fresh Big Red relayists might be the difference in the meet. I'm predicting another down-to-the-wire affair, not far from last year's nailbiter.
Dunno whether fun. can make an analysis based on the actual entries, but it would be really, really interesting. BTW that 400 is going to be crazy: five heats, advancing eight men strictly on time!?!
HERE WE GO HEADING INTO DAY 1: Men's Projections

I know its a strong field but I would bet at least $2014 that Steve Mangan will finish higher than 5th in the mile run. The kid is an animal in the last 150 and the only thing keeping him from a 1500m championship last spring was Peter (MF?) Callahan. Now that he is taking a break from ski-poling around, he is developing into a national class miler. Look for him and Geoghegan to close hard and bring home 18 points between the two of them. And keep in mind this is all coming from a non-biased observer ;)

From your mouth to the meet gods' ears...
Best bet for following the meet is to go to HTC, but I have to mention Mozia's shot putting. He was leading after the first three rounds, but hadn't done anything special. His first throw in the finals was 20.30, though, and he just improved from there. A 68-foot throw is serious business. It was just a genuine pleasure to see something difficult done really right.
I believe he'll be at indoor Worlds next week, throwing for Nigeria.

It's understandable, often a 230 lb guy will be leading out the first leg of the DMR.
Congrats to Cornell men and Harvard women on defending their Heps titles. Bonus congrats to Dartmouth women on challenging Harvard for the title.
But can anyone explain yo me what happened to the Cornell women? They had the most qualifiers for Sunday and only managed 5th? I know Dartmouth really stepped up their game today, but wow.
Also, can anyone explain to me what happened in the men's 4x4? Cornell ran into Yale?

After he handed off, the Cornell guy ran into the leaving Yale guy and the Yale guy fell.

Wow - I thought that only happened in high school. Thanks for clarifying.

I imagine the Cornell coaches would also like to know wth happened. Apparently their long sprinters did well--three of the top four in the open 400, and 3sec-plus winners in the 4x400--but very nearly everyone else underperformed.
But maybe there's no unifying factor. Sometimes things just fall apart in a perfect storm. It happens. We'll see how outdoor goes--or maybe ECAC next week, though Cornell often takes partial teams there.
Heps Diistance points:
Columbia 54
Dartmouth 37
Brown 34
Princeton 21
Harvard 21
Cornell 20
Penn 16
Yale 12
What's up with the Princeton distance squad? They had a great fall season but seemed to come up short yesterday, particularly relative to their performances at Indoor Heps in past years.

Well, the bad pacing in the 3k really threw them off a bit. But the distance races were pretty loaded between Princeton, Dartmouth, Harvard, and Columbia. Someone was bound to come up short.
Their student newspaper did not really state any blame:
http://dailyprincetonian.com/sports/2014/03/mclean-excels-in-tigers-2nd-place-finish-women-earn-fourth/Speaking of student newspapers, I was checking out Columbia's Heps recap and I did not realize that so many of their women athletes were competing injured or ill.
http://www.columbiaspectator.com/sports/2014/03/02/women-finished-3rd-men-4th-hepsSadly, I cannot find anything in Cornell's Daily Sun.
Y'know, I really think more should have been made of the Harvard men's performance at Heps. They finished closer to Princeton than Princeton did to Cornell--and the Cornell/Princeton competition was considered a close one!
Harvard's throwers had some physical problems; otherwise, I could envision their having given Princeton a decent run--or at least having finished with a triple-digit score. (Top three final scores were 145, 117, and 95.)
Jason Saretsky has caught a lot of flak over the last few years, but it seems like he's continuing to build a pretty competitive program (for both sexes). Credit where it's due.
The Harvard's men performance at Indoor Heps was a more well-rounded one than it has been at recent Heps.
Scored in (# of scorers):
shot put (2)
pole vault (1)
hurdles (1)
60 (2)
800 (1)
5k (2)
4x4
DMR
triple jump (2)
weight throw (3)
Got 7th in the 3k, 4x800
They also had more overall Sunday final qualifiers (5 in 2014) than they did last year (4 in 2013).
Granted, Harvard got a boost in the 4x400 due to the Cornell DQ and Yale DNF.
Harvard is not just a straight up throwing school anymore :-)
They will be graduating a number of scoring seniors though this year (Korolev, Leakos, Brode, Wilson that I can list right now).
Looking ahead to ECAC/IC4A, I see--if my counting is correct--that Cornell has had 46 men and 28 women qualify for the meet in individual events. Each squad has also qualified in all three relays, so it wouldn't be a complete surprise if they added a few more for relay duty.
[But that seems more likely on the women's side--the men might again hold out some of their individual-event qualifiers and have them go fresh in relays. That seemed to work fairly well at Heps. They're seeded 13th (4x8) and 8th (DM) in the longer relays, so maybe they would hold out potential relayists whom they deemed unlikely to advance to individual-event finals.]
The men will likely have several guys hors de combat, considering injuries/illness and conflicts with other meets. Still, ~40 competing at the meet is a pretty hefty crew!
GO BIG RED!

Below is a list of Ivy League athletes who qualified to compete at NCAA's. I hope I didn't leave anyone out. Good representation in the Men's Mile and High Jump.
I mainly follow the Dartmouth runners. They have Steve Mangan and Geoghegan wrongly listed as FR and JR...they are both SR's. Megan Krumpoch is seeded 5th in the 800M...her 2:04 is about a 4 second improvement over last year! She's a star in her own right; as a Sophomore she ran the 400M leg of the 3rd Place DMR @ NCAA's, last year won the Ivy 400M hurdles title and qualified for NCAA's, this year she won the 800M title @ Heps and was part of the 800M relay team that also won @ Heps. I feel I have to point her out because Abbey D' gets most of the press (rightly so).
