Well said. This is exactly what Level II should be about. The vast majority of us with the cert. will not be an Olympian's coach but we may open the door for them to become an Olympian one day. Too many people are not willing to do this job, get raw, talented athletes the basic knowledge and direction they need before moving on to a better, more experienced coach. Whether it's their ego, stupidity, whatever, they don't want to let their athlete move on. Here's a quick example from my point of view. Jordan Hasay's high school coach is very, very good but he has yielded to a better coach (no offense to Mando). He found the talent, pointed her in the right direction, brought her along appropriately, and now she's on the verge of BIG things. On the other hand, Alan Webb's situation, from where I see things, was very different. A coach who, once again, is very, very good didn't yield to the more experienced coach. Yes, Webb had success and maybe it wasn't the coaching but I would guess that many believe he hasn't reached his potential. The bottom line is, Level II and all the education is absolutely necessary for laying the ground work for future U.S success. There are far more coaches out there that don't know diddly than those who do. Those other 25,000 coaches have an integral, albeit thankless, job/duty to get their athletes ready for the next step in their career. USATF's Coaching education gave those coaches the framework for the Salazars, Lannanas, Mahons, to build on. Where this framework is going to come from now....... I don't know. But it doesn't look like USATF is going to be adequate any more.

The SINGLE purpose of USATF Coaching Education is to get USA athletes on the podium at the Olympics, and I repeat single purpose. This is why the USOC requires it. With that in mind the list of coaches you mentioned, numbering what, maybe a dozen or two, take the athlete the final step to the podium. It is the other 25,000 track and field coaches in this country that build the critical mass of talent to "hand-off" to the mentioned coaches. Level 2 is, and was designed to be for that purpose, it is to make solid, motivated high school and help inexperienced collegiate coaches better coaches in order to accomplish this. The Podium Projects and Level 3 are scientists talking to the Vinnys and the Jerrys to help them make that final step. People can throw all sorts of stones at the model, but that is the way Vern and Joe and others designed it.
