One time, me and a friend of mine were standing in line at the bank. I had my college track team's shirt on and a guy in line asked us if we ran track for the university. we were like yeah, we run the 400m. He said, "oh really? a buddy of mine used to run the 400. How fast do you guys run it?"
We replied, "About 48 seconds."
To which he replied, "Oh, well my friend was pretty good. He ran about 42". We went on to tell him that the current world record was 43 and some change. But he was positive about his friends 42sec 400m.
Could have been 400 yds? The girl's track coach at my HS had a world record in some event like that (1000 yards?) for a little while when they started keeping track of records. I never had a reason not to believe that one...
An oldish guy came up to me on the street in NYC and asked me what i run for a mile. I told him it was "real slow". He pointed to himself with his thumb and said, "4:01" with a cooky smile, and walked off towards the tennis courts in central park.
The biggest bullshitter i've ever met was a guy I met one summer claimed he ran Boston in 2:30 a couple years ago (not officially, of course, but claimed was a bandit). The guy weighed 220 pounds, and said he was 180 at the time -- it wasn't muscle. Imagine how fast he would be if he lost 30 pounds of fat. :) He did a few runs with me (i run my easy runs very easy) and basically had trouble keeping up, had to stop a few times. He later saw me run a 5:40 on the track at the end of an easy threshold-type workout, and told people it was a 4:40 when i was standing next to him. I was a *bit* embarrassed, i had to correct him and say it was 5:40. I think he even argued with me about it.
