Colorado has hired Tennessee’s Sean Carlson as the Buffs’ new track coach. That’s another jump up for Sean. “We’re so happy to welcome Sean Carlson to Boulder and the University of Colorado,” said athletics director Rick Geor...
Aren’t most coaches of top programs really good recruiters but not really good coaches? When you start asking former athletes at those top programs about their coach most of them leave disappointed
I don't know how he'll do..Notre Dame did great one year in XC when their men got second and had that extremely impressive pack time.
However I don't see any Colorado athletes, past and present, commenting positively about this hire other than Joe Clrcker on the gram. There's no ripple of enthusiasm here.
So time will tell, but a lot of people tied to tge CU program will be watching, hoping it works out.
geez it's been a few hours and the longest tentured coach in the school was let go. Given them a minute.
I swear this board loves to bash CU but constantly leg-hump NAU, BYU and other suspect schools

It's chiefly disgruntled G5 (and worse) assistants all worked up on their summer off with no bites after fishing their resumes out to a few dozen P5 openings.

Not disgruntled or coaching. Point me toward the outpouring of complimentary instagram or social media posts from Colorado runners and alums. It's been real quiet.
The fact of the matter is that in a completely arbitrary coaching selection process, there are very few coaches in the U.S. that can compare to Wetmore. His "slide" remains inherently better than the vast majority with some outstanding seasons mixed in.
Those are some big shoes to fill. And the Boulder alum and community will be crowing from the rafters if a very high standard is not achieved and maintained rather quickly. It's a great opportunity for Carlson, but at the same time it is way out on a precarious limb.

I wonder if part of it is how the athletic department handled things by just straight out firing Wetmore. Not the incoming coach's fault but creates a bad taste about the situation.
Stop with the "no distance tradition at Tennessee" stuff. Vols have a very good distance history with one natty and tons of SECs. Knoxville is a great running city with lots of places to run. And if it's so bad compared to Cali, why is everyone from there moving here? Also, not that it matters, but Tennessee has solid academics. I believe US News ranked Tennessee among the top 50 publics or around there. Here's a good website showing some older UT history:
Currently living in Knoxville, lived in East TN all my life.
I agree about the distance tradition. Anyone that says Tennessee doesn't have one is just ignorant - which isn't a knock on them, it was a long time ago to be fair.
I have to disagree with you about Knoxville being a great running city though. Its not. It kind of sucks really.
Not my experience from my 4 years in school there. Knoxville Track Club predates even my Chattanooga Track Club! Both fantastic running orgs. Glad we agree on our great Tennessee distance running history!

Carlson was fired from Tennessee. Good timing getting the Colorado gig. He’s not well liked by other coaches and his former staff. Colorado picked a rough one

Can you name one good place to run in Knoxville other than the 2.5 mile stretch on Cherokee Boulevard?

This isn’t going to end well
Carlson is probably the best they could get under the circumstances (if he wasn't fired from UT). It's a good opportunity, obviously, but people like Mike Smith aren't interested or have good things going at their current positions. And then who wants to join under the cloud that Wetmore/Burroughs just left? Plus, Boulder isn't the sell it used to be.
It would have been a great promotion for someone already in the program or in Boulder.
I was away all day from the internet and to come back and see Carlson got the job, I was shocked at first but then considering the above, it made more sense to me.

How tall is Carlson? From afar he gives a lot of short guy energy.
