It's sad when certain circumstances arise, true jealousy and hate seeps through. Athing is a talent. She is a young lady who chooses herself and how she wants to experience her life without running being the sole reason she lives. Many of you have made sharp comments because she hasn't ran much this season. This woman is the REIGNING OLY Champion. She's clearly proven she can race over and over. I'm not contending she deserves a re-run, but it's always sad seeing people bash good talent when they come up short.
Fairest thing may be to just let Athing Mu run a solo time trial and see if she beats any of them. I’m sorry, this isn’t about your Olympic story. It’s about gold medals. Not taking Mu will cost the US a gold medal through no fault of her own.
Exactly.
Mu is the ONLY USA medal chance for the 800 in Paris.
Would be stupid not to let her rerun it.
How do you know this? There is not much racing history since Tokyo and from what I saw in Budapest she has become a headcase and her stock went down. For all we know, she'd show up to Paris and refuse to run because of the injustice of the psychological pressure being placed on her. Or she'd get herself tripped like this in one of the rounds. I feel for her and eveb more for the other girls that were impacted, but they too could have derisked their races by running to the front or using their elbows to secure some space. There is always a lot you can do.
And people calling to place her in a 4 x 400 pool are idiots. She hasn't raced for us to know what 400 shape she's in, we have many better 400 runners than her regardless who are hungry for medals, and she simply doesn't deserve that.
Texas AAA 1990 4x400 regional meet. Was a travesty. One team really botched the exchange and took out the strong favorites and another slower team at the first exchange (both of them had baton bounce out of the zone). full race run and two really good (3:13 4x400) teams qualified. they reran it after 10-15 minutes and the two teams with three rested legs in the first race won, with the slower team race around 3:15 and both of the previously qualified teams just missing out with high 3:15 / low 3:16. Very memorable but a complete travesty. Stole a spot from at least one team to give it to a local sweetheart and the stands were close to a full on riot from fans whose teams had their state qualifier stripped away. Clearly 10-15 minutes wasn’t enough time, but there really isn’t any great way to recreate a race. Good to have the rule for a Tonya Harding type DQ, but shouldn’t be used outside of extreme circumstances. The rest is just sport and sometimes it sucks.
Re-running the race in a few days would force Hurta-Klecker to choose between the 800 and 1500. So she puts in the work to qualify for both and then gets screwed again by having to get up an opportunity she earned. None of the other 800 finalists have to make that choice.
Suppose they rerun the race and 3 different wonen finish top 3, and Mu isn't one of them. Then what? The first race just never happened and Adkins, Wilson and Whittaker are just out of luck? Can you imagine the controversy?
There’s absolutely no basis to hold a rerun. If anyone was at fault for Mu’s fall, it was Mu herself. The rule authorizing the rerun would apply only if someone else caused Mu to fall by “jostling, running across, or obstructing” her.
Mu made a dumb move, and although it sucks that it happened on this stage, she’s the one who deserves to pay for it. Maybe it wouldn’t have happened if she raced more frequently.
Agreed. Gold medal favorite got impeded. You have to redo this on Friday or Saturday.
Got impeded? Looked like she swerved to her left and bumped her leg into another runner, which caused her to trip over her own legs. I feel for her, but at least watching in real time it didn't look like anyone impeded her.
Lets be honest, this is exactly correct. Running has risks, you try to minimize them, but Mu chose the riskiest move she could do.
Did yall see what valby did in the 5k when she ended up in DFL at the fist turn? She slowed to a jog, hung a right turn and ran around everyone. Or, she could have elbowed and kicked her way through a pack. She chose the smarter path.

Follow-up: I guess Mu’s obstruction of others (Rogers, Sage) could provide a basis for a rerun. But then Mu should be DQed and barred from participating in the rerun. Better not to hold a rerun though, IMO.
The women's 4x4 pool can contain 5 women. You are allowed 1 alternate, who is not a competing athlete, and can only be a competing athlete under the Late Athlete Replacement Policy.
Of that 5, any athletes entered in the individual event must be in the 4x4 pool.
So Ellis, Butler & Holmes are in the 4x4 regardless (unless any get injured...)
This means the US can nominate 2 more 'competing' women.
We know one will be McLaughlin. That leaves only one more place.
Consider this: the finals of the women's 400m and women's 4x100 are the evening of the women's 4x400 heats. This may have a big influence on who that final nomination is. Does it in any way jeopardise Gabby Thomas's nomination in either relay? If she is in both, does she run the 4x4 hts the morning of her 4x1 final? Does this mean she may not be in the 4x1 instead? In which is she needed, both? Does McLaughlin run the 4x4 hts the morning after the 400mh final? If all 3 US women make the 400m final (unlikely..) then at least one of them has to run the 4x4 hts the same morning. There are a few scenarios here at play.
Mu's only hope to run the 4x4 is to a) run an open 400m in under 50.5 and b) argue re the timetable, that it would be too much for Thomas to do both.
It’s not exactly schadenfreude I’m feeling, because I’m not happy that she fell; I am not happy, but rather satisfied.
There is justice in all of this.
What IS funny is that the would-be fashion primadonna won’t compete in Paris, the fashion capital of the world! That is a HUGE loss for her, and a well-deserved one.
lol the once-in-all-lifetime opportunity to compete at an Olympics in Paris, the absolute gold standard for a fashionista athlete, gone! Because she was irresponsible. lol
And I don’t buy the injury talk either. I see no particular reason to believe any of what these athletes, coaches, or agents have to say.
btw I love the 3 chix who qualified, even Allie Wilson who to my ear sounded like Janice from Friends, I was smiling the whole interview, just waiting for that laugh😂👍
If you rerun every time you are not pleased with the result, then you better cancel the trials and select the people you like "on paper".
Otherwise, every time somebody sees s/he w ill not qualify s/he will just have to fall and then the race is rerun. It could be rerun undefinitely like this.
Mu ran up on Rogers, tripped and fell. If anything, Mu impeded Rogers and Hurta-Klecker when she fell. None of the top 3 were involved in the fall and they deserved to go. Akins, Wilson, and Whittaker deserve to go. They had the right tactics and stayed out of the fray. Hurta-Klecker admitted she wanted to be in the back but maybe being closer to the front would have been better for her and avoid the craziness of a bunched up field.
I don’t understand why there’s so much hate in the comments. It was really hard to see her fall and lose a chance at competing, but what was amazing was that she got up and finished the race. She ran and ran alone across a line that the others had cross 100m meters ago. I am so excited to see the top three compete at the largest stage, but as a person who has fallen many times in life physically and metaphorically…it was amazing to see a woman get back up again and keep going. Makes me want to keep going too.
When you are tall with long legs running in a pack is a big no-no, especially in the 800 meters and especially in a close high pressure race like the trials final. This is on Mu. Her height and long legs are an asset and a liability, she must accentuate the asset and mitigate the liability. Putting yourself in a pack in that situation does the exact opposite.
I haven’t read all the pages on this thread, but an important question for me is: Has Mu requested a rerun? Or is this all about RoJo making an issue. People are bashing Mu for not racing very much, but is it Mu that’s making an issue out of this?
