Kessler got a little tripped up and then just jumped off the track even though he EASILY could have kept running. He was perfectly fine, it wouldn't even have cost him a quarter of a second. It was a cowardly move by Kessler.
Teare, on the other hand, got tripped really badly but kept running and still managed a 3:53.
Former 3:33 runner here. This is an ignorant post. When you are running 55/400 pace and this happens, it is incredibly difficult to regain your composure. So Kessler did not chicken out, his only mistake is that he tends to run the rail in races where it is difficult to react, but he definitely didn't chicken out.
None of your posts makes the point that it wasn’t chickening out. “Difficult to regain your composure” so you decide to quit is the definition of chickening out.
Perhaps there's a bit of coaching that has been installed in Hobbs here.
Ronnie thinks Hobbs can not only medal in Paris, but win it outright if everything plays out perfectly. This race is just practice and Hobbs made the right choice to step off and save it for the Trials.
The example of Teare finishing isn't a good one. Hobbs doesn't have a "chip on his shoulders" type of mindset like Teare does. Teare would probably also finish a race injured just to prove to everyone that he's good enough (see last summer) while Hobbs knows better.
If a certain Ole Miss 800m runner did something similar I don’t think the board would have much sympathy. But either way Hobbs will have plenty of chances to redeem himself in the next few months. If things go well this race will be forgotten.

Yeah
Cade Flatt and Hobbs Kessler
very comparable careers and progress

Oregon's Cooper Teare is a two-time NCAA Champion and in the 2021 NCAA men's division I cross country championship, he crawled to his finish. Teare was OK af...
I just assumed Kessler knew he was DQ’d for stepping on the infield and he is a competitor — why run 3:53-4 when you were going for 3:46-8 just to finish? He has his eyes on the long term. There is no reason to finish a race when you trip into a DQ that early. Stepping off and saving it may even mean he gets to run another race somewhere in the next couple weeks instead and have a better shot at it.
i thought it was obvious he quit running because he didn’t just trip, he tripped into a DQ.
Are you slow? I don't even care for the guy but you could see him limping right after it happened. Clearly he's smart enough to stop to avoid a major injury.

Glad you mentioned this. Prophetically, I mentioned that Kessler likes the rail in a post yesterday morning. Shortest way around but it has its hazards.
If he tries to step back on at that point, he is jumping into traffic.

Don't think the poster was equating them, but rather comparing the feelings of the board towards the two athletes. Hobbs is certainly held in much higher regard than Flatt and should be.
Lots of get-back-on-the track and race. I agree. Good lesson.
But not mentioned that I can see, Hocker cut into his space. Hobbs needs to learn one of two actions. Slow down and know the guy cutting in is being an ass, or hold your ground and use your hand on his hip and keep him from coming over.
Think if Hocker tried that on Jacob or Kerr. they would not have let him in, and he would have known it with equivalent force to keep him out.
Lesson learned Hobbs, don't be a nice or timid guy in the race, own your space and be decisive. I like Hobbs a lot and think Hocker needs some schooling.
Goodness, give him a break. He's 21 years old and just growing into professional racing. No reason this thread should be hot on letsrun or as disparaging as it is.
Except that this wasn't his first go at an international race. He went pro, and made a collegiate decision to drop out at a minor inconvenience
