We prefer to have 1 thread per subject matter and have merged three threads into 1. The 2nd thread was entitled, "Why does Jakob talk so much trash?" The third thread was titled, "New Jakob Interview: Olympics should be “a walk in the park”, calls some competitors “a**holes and idiots”:
If Jakob was truly as confident as he claims, he wouldn't need to disrespect and put down the competition like this. There's a difference between "I'm the best" and "the others are weak." I hope Kerr, Nuguse, and others give him a good ass-kicking in the final.
He never said the others were weak. Quite disrespectful of you to misquote him like this.
yes, quite alot misquoted and taken out of context. seems the majority here have not listened to the podcast. very strange for others to have such strong opinions with not having the correct information. though, that seems to be the way of the world now, unfortunately.
But this is a runner who claims winning his feature event at the Olympics should be "a walk in the park" when he has been beaten in consecutive championship finals over that distance. Where was "the walk in the park" then?
He said the walk in the park will be in Paris. We will see whether he is right or wrong.
He didn't say he might win. He spoke of winning as a foregone conclusion - which is what "a walk in the park" implies. Whether he is favoured to win or not it is a conceited observation and he has already shown in championship finals he can be beaten. With his attitude he makes it easy to root for "the next guy".

Imagine an athlete believing he could defend his title. INCREDIBLE! What a sh!t attitude. If the athlete isn't crying at the start line as they are anticipating a last place finish and vomiting due to sheer surprise and embarrassment over their undeserved win at the finish line they DO NOT have my vote.
MY athletes are looking themselves in the mirror each morning, saying "I will never win, I am not good enough, why should I even bother with this BS".
He's talking about European Champs in Rome, not Olympics. Podcast is by European Athletics.
this. 90% + here seem not to have even listened to the podcast.
Huh? I just listened. At 9:30 it plays the replay of his two WC losses (to Wightman and Kerr). Then at 10:00 he is clearly talking about the drama with Kerr. At 12:50 he says that Tokyo will be different than Paris
That's when he says it will be a walk in the park. So...what are you taking about?
Truth is, it’s hard to tell if he’s talking about Rome or Paris. But my guess is Rome. The best brits usually duck him in the european championship. «Walk in the park» make sense there, but not in the olympics. He’s not that stupid.

Pretty sure he’s talking about Paris- he switches to talking about the Olympics at 12:50 and the “walk in the park” comment comes immediately after that. Although, all the questions got edited out so it’s hard to be 100% sure.
It's a catch-22. To be able to win in a "walk in the park," he has to train with more intensity than he's ever trained. But to stay healthy and uninjured, he has to train with less intensity than he did the last two championships.
1) His training could be going very well. He wouldn’t be talking like this if he didn’t think he had a pretty good chance of winning. That being said he did give himself an out, with the injury or sickness comment and he can easily fall back on his preseason injury if Kerr out kicks him again.
2) He’s going to try and win emphatically and control as much of the race as possible. I think this could actually play into Kerr or Nuguse’s hands if he does a lot of the leading to break them and they have the fitness to get around him with 200m to go.
Overall I think Jakob and Josh may be too focused on each other and another contender could steal it. I think if someone upsets them it would be either Nordås, Nuguse, Hocker if he’s finally reached sub 3:30 fitness, or Laros if he makes another big jump.
The 1500 is extremely competitive. If Jakob doesn't string out the field he risks not even being on the podium. Kerr and others understand his desperation so they will absolutely let him pace. The worse that can happen in their case is they have more raw speed and will take their chances in a super tactical final 400. I cannot sew a scenario where Jakob sits on someone else.
I hope McSweyn doesn't act as a de facto pacer for Jakob in Paris. Actually I hope he doesn't get selected in the 1500 at all.

I would agree that the comment was in relation to the European Championships. Certainly, he very briefly discussed Tokyo and Paris; but I don’t feel that’s specifically what the “walk in the park” comment was directed towards. The whole discussion is based on the European Championships anyway.

Oh no, I love it no matter what. He obviously knows what excuses have been thrown at him for losing and is throwing it right back at his competitors (Kerr, Whitman, Cram interview?). It sets up a great stage for a great 1500 Olympic final. However, getting injured or sick is all a part of a professional athlete preparing for the ultimate, no matter what the sport-that is why we love sport. However, I do not think he was injured or sick when losing to Whitman? Either way, I can't wait until he finally runs this year.

You are either being deliberately obtuse or have no grasp of nuance. Ingebrigtsen isn't expressing self-belief; he is showing an arrogant contempt for his other competitors - "a walk in the park" - and coming off injury an untested confidence in his powers of recovery. There is a very big difference between possessing self-confidence and belittling one's opposition, as he has. As I said - an egotist. Pride cometh before a fall - and for Jakob it is usually in the form of a Scotsman.
Starting at 10:00 he says defending his Olympic title should be a walk in the park if he doesn’t get sick or injured, and appears to take a shot at certain competitors again. Thoughts?
Yeah I didn't know if this was just clickbait or trolling but it's 100% not - direct quote
"I think some people are just erm, a$holes and being idiots".
Wow. Ironically, he immediately then says "for me it's all about myself and the sport of running and trying to be as good as I can be" - but of course the irony is that it's clearly more than that or you wouldn't be so concerned with people to the point of calling them a$holes and idiots.
I said this a while ago on the large thread Rojo posted about Jakob comments on his WR aspirations etc, this more than ever sounds like a 23 year old kid trying to find himself and just not having the experience or emotional intelligence to articulate it the right way. And we've all been there at some point in our life. I mean he's really living an insular existence - he grew up in a town of 70'000 people, all he's ever done in his life is run and excel in what is lonely sport where you are constantly in your own head. I think he would probably love to get on with a guy like Josh Kerr (who surely he is referencing) and there is probably a part of Kerr's journey that Jakob wishes he had something similar - like a college experience in the US, not being in this weird (and as we know at times abusive) family-exclusive training group.
I just feel like those comments in particular are more reflective of sadness and frustration vs anything malicious, even though they come off as being super unnecessary on the surface. He's a great runner and one of the greatest we've ever seen already in his short career - but everything comes at a cost. Everything.
we have all been there?
wait a second. multiple world records and world titles. olympic gold.
no my dude, you me and pretty much everyone else have not all been there

This is another rephrasing of the one thing he says over and over again. "I am the best so I will win". It is not new or interesting each time he says it. It is expected, it is the only thing he says when asked.
It does not matter that he loses sometimes, he will continue to say it. Does not matter how much he believes it or not, he is not backing off the position now.
FWIW Kerr will always say the same thing too, with a little more modesty, approximately "I am good enough to win the race".
It would be fitting if Nuguse or Hocker would win Olympic gold. It would shut both of them up for a minute
