I have no words 😢
LRC note: We changed the thread title. It was started when people weren't sure if he had died and it was entitled, "Rip Kelvin Kiptum??"
I have no words 😢
An all-time great taken far too early. Such sad news.
RIP Kelvin
Very sad
RIP
Frick
Just so sad. His run in Chicago was so exciting to watch.
Sad news. Many saying he was at his prime. I don’t think he was even close to his prime yet. Dude had massive untapped potential. Having driven in Kenya, accidents are never a surprise. I live in a state where the drivers are pretty bad, and even I get nervous driving in Kenya. Makes my home state drivers seem like grandmas. In the villages along busy highways, even the villagers build their own ‘speed bumps’ with dirt to try and slow the vehicles down.
RIP Kelvin.
He was a legend in the making.
I was persuaded he would be the first man ever to break 2:00 in a "real" Marathon.
RIP

Such a match for the marathon we have never seen before. He ran 2:01:53 in Valencia in 2022, 2:01:25 in London in April 2023, and 2:00:35 WR in Chicago in October 2023. That is his entire marathon career. How swift and fleeting his meteoric rise.
I'm so shocked by this truly heartbreaking news. I'm thinking of Kiptum's family and friends at this devastating time.
Selfishly, I'm also thinking of all the races we'll never get to watch him run, all the records we'll never get to see him break. We'll never see him run in the Olympics and never see him take on Kipchoge.
A supreme talent who has left our world and our sport far too soon.
Unbelievably horrible news. That was a punch in the gut to see.
Very sad.
just like Sammy Wanjiru. SOOOOOO SAD!!
Salvador Sanchez the Mexican boxer is the closest parallel I can think of
WANJIRU AND NOW KIPTUM....TOO SAD
This news brought me to tears on the train back from Millrose. I didn't know Kelvin and never even saw him race in person, but from reading and listening about him and his training, it seems that he was a truly disciplined and dedicated person and runner, which are traits I value and to which I aspire. I really respected and admired him, and looked forward to seeing what the future held for him. It's a really sad day for his family, and the sport at large. We've lost a giant.
At age 24, who knows how many times Kelvin Kiptum would have run a marathon in under 2 hours. He was on the verge of establishing sub-2 as a standard for every marathon he was in. Condolences to his family. RIP to an eternal legend.
This Hurts Taken way too soon
