Do these “conversations” ever pan out? Every year some dude in the mountains runs 3:5x and then gets dusted at natty’s. Imma call it now, Nico ain’t breaking 3:54 this year.
Well they downvote you but realistically Nico is not ever running 3:50. If he could he would have NCAA titles by now. But he is doing well for sure.
The conversions are often very close—hence the downvotes. Several years ago, Christian Soratos ran an NCAA leading converted time that most lets runners were doubting. But he backed it up big time at ncaas

Here is the deal. We have seen Nico run for years. He did not suddenly become a 1:48 runner. IF he did, he is a medal contender at 5000m.
Im starting to think Nico is Adel Mechaal 2.0. Ungainly form, kick that is surprisingly good even if it looks extremely forced. Also good down to the 1500/mile. Mechaal has never really run a great 5,000, though has done well at 3,000. Hopefully Nico can excel more at the 5/10.
You guys remember when OAC had like 6 guys under 4 at altitude last year in training? Probably at like 2k lower elevation, Nuguse ran 3:57 I think, and he ran 3:47i a bit later, and Hoare and Romo were both around 3:50. Hoare had been living at altitude for a couple years at that point too. Time trial at 5k feet vs a race at 7k feet, plus Nico was WAY ahead of 2nd.
I don't know if Nico is really gonna be able to hold 57s (though I hope he gives it a shot soon), but I think this points to him being able to hold 60s for a lot longer than a mile. 7:37 3k with a huge kick pointed to a faster time, but 7:30 seems a whole lot more realistic now.
Thank you for remembering and pointing out that Nico has developed a good kick . . . as his 27.+/200 closer at BU last month attests.
Galen Rupp didn't have a kick for many years . . . until he did.
And now Nico . . . who looks like he's become the complete package as a distance runner.
Rather than developing a kick, Young has improved his fitness. I assume his 3:57 included even splits, and if so, why didn’t he kick to 3:55?
If he’s with guys like Fisher and Kincaid with a lap to go at the OT, he’s still going to be blown off the track.

Anything is possible but Mechaal’s progression is suspicious as hell to me. The year he turned 28 his personal best was 3:34.70 and at 30 he runs 3:30.77. Who knows?
I would disagree and say that sea level people coming up to altitude could not even run what their sea level time converts to because you all are a bunch of whiny sissies. There’s a reason only co people do well on that track and it’s cuz sea level people don’t want to waste their time just to get embarrassed
Gotta Love the long term plan of Mike Smith for Nico and what he has him doing indoors. Same for the Sahlmans and how he has them running the 400. Don't be scared to be different. But with Nico, this is translating to some excellent time trialing and no one can argue against that. This result is awesome! But can he do it when racing in trials or the last lap of championship races? Can he change gears when he has to or does he even have it in him to do so? And don't get me wrong....I'm a big Newbury Park fan. Time trialing and racing are 2 different things. Especially when you get multiple athletes with similar abilities occupying the same space.
I guess his plan didn’t include Nico running well in cross country. Changing gears will come from improved fitness and why is he having NXN champions running 400s? Having a 5/10K run a 1500m is not revolutionary and most coaches can handle having multiple good athletes.
You’re gushing over nothing at all.
I have absolutely no idea what you are even talking about. Seriously. All I said was, yes...this mile might have looked very sexy. But what I was implying was if Nico ever gets into a big race final...say an olympic 5000.....can he throw in sub :60 last lap where someone may take off and run a 50m stretch in sub 7s? Thank you for stating the Captain Obvious that changing gears can come with improved fitness. Can't any aspect of racing? But some do it better than others and can Nico take off and stay with the Africans or whomever when it's time to go with 400-500m left?

Good point on Rupp and especially the year he got the silver in London in the 10,000. I read some of the work he did to prepare for those last 2 laps and it paid off. Gosh...I forget what coach said there's no reason to train for PRs Olympic years. Just be ready to race!
This guy runs with his mouth gaping open. I’m sorry but he’s like outside the top 100 in the world , he’s not Jakob. Why would you do these kind of antics when you are a no name outside America ? It’s disrespectful and arrogant. Open your mouth normally and breathe through your nose also . Not some horse slobbering mess.

I loved Nico until he had to bring his sexuality in to the picture. I hate the crap not people's sexuality but just the high light of the deal. It's like if your straight and mention your straight you are going to get slammed for being according to the 20th century normal. If you are Gay, you are a hero why? I personally don't care what you are interested in off the track I am interested! in you on the track
Are you two slow twitchers talking about the same Josh Kerr that mowed down 17 time NCAA champion and record holder Ed Cheserek for the 2017 indoor mile championships??
To be fair, Ed Cheserek was like 22 in highschool, 30s in college, and in his late 60s by 2017.

Nico barely even talks about it, unlike people on this message board.
Awesome result for Nico! Not sure I would give as much weight to the conversion chart though. Similarly to us lessening those conversions to kenyan competitions at altitude, Nico has been at altitude for a few years and most likely is a little more accustomed to it
Think this summed it up well early in this thread. Awesome result for Nico. Altitude will affect well adjusted runners a little less so the conversions aren't going to be 1:1. I would put him in low-3:50s shape rn. Obviously 7k feet had some level of impact. 3:48 seems a bit out there but it shows the kind of potential that he has. Go down to sea level & run a good bit faster than your 3:37/3:56 PBs.
Habtom Samuel's 3:59.12 at 4958 ft in Albuquerque converts to a 3:53.4 at sea level, although I doubt that, as an altitude-born, raised, and trained athlete, he would get nearly that much of a drop at sea level. I'd think that 3:55 would be more likely. Still, very good.
