I'm closing this whole thread to new posts. It's served its purpose and I don't know what else can be said on the matter.
I must state though that many of the posts in this thread, particularly the ones praising Mike Smith while ripping Dave Smith disgust me.
Those posters are basically saying, "If you recruit foreign athletes that are white, you are a high integrity person like Mike Smith, but if you recruit foreign athletes that are black, then you are shady and don't deserve respect."
Take your racism somewhere else.
The reality is Mike Smith trotted out a women's team yesterday with four transfers on it including three of who were from outside the US. He was doing everything he could to win that race just like Dave in the men's race.
Take your moral preening/racism somewhere else.

Lol you must be delusional. No where is there anger in me about the results of last years meet. I was there and enjoyed a great race. NAU did what they needed to do to win. OSU home corse or not it was a great spectator race. Dave must have cut you from the team to cause this much anger. It’s time to get over it and move on.

There was a thread about Dave Smith on here after xc nationals awhile back, maybe around 2017 or so when a bunch of his former athletes came on here and told their stories about him. Even with half the posts getting deleted, it was pretty telling. "Love" and "respect" are not exactly words I would use to describe people's feelings about him. I attempted to look it up to link it on this thread, but it appears it's been scrubbed. That alone should tell you all you need to know.

Thats the difference between Mike and Dave. Dave used to develop and do things the right way. He won his previous championship with hard work and by developing his runners. Not this year. He got tired of losing to NAU, got lazy and in desperation went out to Africa and recruited ready made runners. He has 4 Africans and a total of 13 foreigners on his distance roster. That tells you everything. He’s no longer developing runners but importing ready made foreigners. In comparison Mike Smith only has 3 foreigners total on his squad. Dave Smith may very well win Saturday and good for him, but he doesn’t deserve to be called a good coach. Good recruiter maybe but good coach? This year he bought the championship not earned it through hard work and development. He’s turned into a lazy coach. Now cry about it lol 😂
What about NAU’s 3 women transfers from New Mexico that have had an immediate impact on their team? Mike Smith didn’t develop them. Joe Franklin did. He bought his to be soon national championship team. Why not call Mike out for that and just focus on Dave?

Because nobody is denying the impact the transfers have had on the NAU women’s team. Because without those transfers NAU women would still be a candidate to podium. Last year they placed 6th without the transfers. The transfers have put NAU over the top and made them favorites. But NAU or Mike Smith doesn’t shy away from saying that. They embrace it, admit it and are thankful. NAU women were very good without the transfers and title contenders with them.

They were NAU’s #2 #4 and #7 at Wisconsin…and that doesn’t include a recent foreign recruit. How is that any different from OSU being a podium contender without the recent Kenyans? NAU wouldn’t be a title contender without those 3 transfers and other foreign recruits that impact their team. The argument is against NAU because they’re not black Africans. NAU NEVER admitted anything?

The criticism for Dave comes because he’s stopped developing runners and instead has turned to poaching ready made International runners. He will probably only have one runner (Alex Maier) from the US on his top 7 on Saturday. The rest will be internationals. On his squad Dave Smith has:

Why do college coaches NEED to develop athletes to win championships? Football coaches win with transfers all the time. Mike Smith’s transfers are all in his scoring 5. He did a great job. So did Dave Smith. Why do people not want international full rosters? Because they feel entitled to their tax dollars? They’re wasted anyways, our politicians lobby it away to themselves. The best teams are the best teams, doesn’t matter the nationality. People here just look for excuses to make to feel unhappy.

Having a highly international roster goes against the purpose of Oklahoma State being a public land grant university. Its purpose is to primarily serve residents of Oklahoma and secondarily to serve the broader United States. Having such a large percentage of international runners on the team goes against the university purpose. It’s also against the spirit of competing in the NATIONAL Collegiate Athletic Association. It’s the NCAA not the ICAA.

Why don't US college sports have a cap on the number of international students on a roster? Canadian conferences have roster limits. I think it's a good idea.

In the press conference today, Dave Smith confirmed that Kipnegetich is the same Kipnegetich that placed 3rd in the Kenyan men's Senior XC championships this year. Ok fine. Much of the NCAA is international.
But Dave, please don't then try to downplay his abilities like you recruited a 'top 20' guy. He's a title contender.

Smith also said the two Kenyans were not offered spots until this July after he had a commit back out and an expected returner tell him they weren't coming back. That gave him money for two spots. They were last minute additions.
