Really shows a lot of character IMO for Ebenyo to first run so hard from 4k out, obviously suffering in the late stages and desperately trying to maintain his lead, and then smile and salute his countrymen when he’s passed in the final 100m with nothing left.
Nice W for Kessler, but let’s not get too excited about what it means for his track prospects. He out-kicked Callum Elson and Sam Prakel; 4th was a guy named Mael Gouyette I had never heard of. Apart from Reynold Cheruiyot, who soiled the bed, it was a rather weak field for a “world championship “.
It's a World Champs meet. As a pro athlete, all you can do is turn up and compete against those around you.
Plus, he's 20 years old, now with a WR and $60000 in his pocket. I'm excited to see what the future holds for him.
Exactly, he could have had enough to outkick anyone today, we don't know. All he had to do was to outkick the strongest here. Also, he got Cheriyoits scalp. Good on him
Slow times, no big names, Olympic champion does not count, no Gidey, Koko (was injured this year or sth) and Eilish McColgan (was injured too) who all have much faster PBs than winning time.
BTW. empty streets - Baltic tribes lands these are not good places for athletics champs. They don't care enough.
I agree. Was thinking these Baltic cities are pretty but I wouldn't want to live there because they're really boring with not a lot going on due to their small populations.

Yeah brave run from Ebenyo and nice to see him happy with another silver medal. Sawe is set to race in Valencia HM soon, and I wonder if its more likely he races on the track next year or moves to the marathon soon? Great run today and an amazing athlete the past couple years. Mailu in 3rd is to race Frankfurt Marathon at the end of the month

Yes, certainly nothing you said contradicts what I said.

In the next years in San Diego (2025) and in Copenhagen (2026) it will possibly be much more of a "party for the people".
Copenhagen Half always has a lot of attention from the public.

I think it’s the marathon next for Sawe. I think Kandie likes dabbling (on the track), and if Sawe had interest he would’ve aside from the Hour run and a low-key 10,000 last year. Wonder if he goes in Boston (adidas race)

I think you might be right. I was hoping Sawe would be at the trials this year because I reckon he could've made the team. I feel like the Olympics may hold a bit more prestige for some 'hybrid' track/road athletes than the world champs though so maybe those who don't make the marathon team for Kenya might race track such as Kamworor, Kandie perhaps, the former however in quite good standings to make the marathon team although NYC he might have to win/beat Chebet to do so

He’s the highest character of athletes if you read up on his story. Has had to fight through a tough childhood, career setbacks and so much.
Amazing. I didn't expect top 10 places front he British team so a silver is great news. I wonder if some of the bigger names are regretting not taking a place now. Elliot Giles, Neil Gourley, George Mills, all top 1500 guys but not quite at the level of challenging for the podium on the track. This was a chance to add a medal to their résumé, any of the three would probably have taken gold over Kessler.
Also, what happened to R. Cheruiyot? 4:05 is awful for a guy of his talent
Team bronze for GB in the women's HM as well. The commentators didn't know it was based on aggregate time rather than places so they thought Morocco and South Africa were ahead. Considering the team that GB sent, two medals, plus top 10 places in both of the 5k races is a great return.
Also been wondering how widely the prize money for the road mile WR was advertised. So many athletes who are just below the podium level left $50k on the table. 3:56 is a walk in the park even for someone like Geordie Beamish. I'm sure Abel Kipsang could do with that sort of cash. Such a missed opportunity

Possibly for sure. The 10,000 team should be Simiyu Ebenyo and then wide open. I can’t see Kipkorir doubling without the bye, and he should probably stick with the 5,000. Kibet ran great at Worlds, but Kandie, Mburu and many more could be in the mix. Marathon team wise it feels like Kipchoge, Kiptum and then either Kamworor/Chebet as you laid out. Mateiko is a dark horse as a really promising debutante.

I know this is LetsRun, but why be cynical when you can be positive? Young man's just won a big meet, and all you can offer is "let's not get too excited about his track prospects"?
Whataboutism or whataboutery (as in "what about…?") denotes in a pejorative sense a procedure in which a critical question or argument is not answered or discussed, but retorted with a critical counter-question which expresse...

You’re underestimating how tired some of these guys are. Kipsang has been struggling the last few races and withdrew seemingly as a result. You saw Cheruiyot bombing today, he has been racing a lot. Similarly, Hull and Nelly Chepchirchir fading back. I don’t think it’s as easy as saying everyone would’ve been able to extend their season and win especially for the guys running out of steam after a long season. It feels like George Mills was maybe the guy I’d point to as still on the upswing and could’ve hit a big payday.

BTW. Where are German women? I saw somewhere both Klosterhalfen and Miriam Dattke? or possibly Alina Reh? were to compete? But they are not even on the start list.
Koko's Instagram has her swimming with the fish in Bali this weekend.
I will have to remind myself where I saw this info.
Also Koko wrote on Sept. 10 "memories for life | recovered | recharged | now back to business" if you are investigative. It looks like her posts after this date are just reminiscences though ofc I don't know for sure.

Sorry for this, partly. I was unprepared for HM.
At least there was 2023 world leader - Irine Jepchumba KIMAIS. Though after her 1:04:37 in Feb in Barcelona she "only" ran 1:08:02 here for 5th (-37s) so all Riga courses were relatively slow? - at least looking at female times.
