If this is any indication, Corning needs a 5th runner
Can't read a ton into those results. Some teams were tempo-ing, etc.
Watching the Red Raider Run at Bear Mountain on Saturday specifically to see what Claudel Chery does.
North Rockland could be getting "underrated" because Chery's XC numbers, while very respectable for a frosh, we're a pretty wide gap behind teammate Ryan Tuohy's. But, once they hit the track for indoor they virtually mirrored each other with very respectable times at 1600m & 3200m right through the spring.
That's one of two things...
It's either a kid who doesn't transition from track to trail particularly well, which happens. Or it's a kid who figured out he's a "runner" at some point between November and January and tore off a big chunk, which also happens, and seems more plausible for a 14-year-old kid.
I'm certainly not sending North Rockland to NXN based upon this 'theory'. But if you've got two speedy sophs chasing 180's backed up by a handful of 145-155 guys, that's a team that's gonna be a PITA for the big boys all year.
I will definitely be back to "own" this post on Saturday night whatever happens. 😆
Seems like the Saratoga boys top returners were all over the place in this meet. Didn’t expect the sophomore to win it.
But they do seem to have depth.
It’s early in the season though. Lots of time for people to get healthy.
St Anthony’s will be racing at the Trials of Miles XC Opening Night this weekend. Will be interesting to see what they have in store this year.
I think this year it will be a barn burner for teams at NXR in NY.
Yeah North Rockland doesn’t have as good of a chance to make it to NXN this year as teams like St Anthony’s, Saratoga, Corning (if they find a 5th), Auburn, and Fairport do.
North Rockland has only 1 senior and the rest of these teams have a lot of seniors except Corning but they were very good last year and had lots of people step up during track.
Next year North Rockland might be doing some big things
Mahoney and Kahabka ran the mile instead of the 2-mile. These results are really hard to say anything about because it's a relay and everybody is running on their own. The results were on the whole a lot slower than last year except for a few individuals. If they're not competitive by Manhattan, it will probably be time to write them off.
Dash in Dark XC relays
Chery actually beat Tuohy at their county championships last XC season (at the same course that Red Raider Run will be at) although Tuohy did not run as well there as he did at the sectional meet where he won and ran 16:38 at Bowdoin Park. I believe they both ran about 16:02-03 at Bear Mountain last year as a frame of reference for tomorrow and later during the season.
