I sure the guy didn't mean any harm, but high school and college female runners get those types of comments a lot more than male runners, so Tuohy is right.
Football and basketball are different. You're trying to emphasize your height and weight to get in your opponents head. A lot of those guys are actually smaller than listed.
We are living in a world where nobody knows what might be considered creepy or offensive anymore. We men can say the question seemed OK (I was more creeped out by the dude saying he has been watching her since HS, just the way he said it, not that it is inappropriate) and then the women can say oh it was an inappropriate question and nobody really knows for sure because it is largely subjective although the “offended” seem to be the ones who dictate the rules.
Oh cut it out. You’re not a little victim because you never bothered to learn proper etiquette. people are going to bristle when grown men make weird comments about young womens bodies, especially when women like katelyn have had their bodies critiqued on message boards since high school
get over it
I stated the truth and it offended you. You just proved my point.
And every college lineman is obese. Let's assume that 1% of female college distance runners have an eating disorder but 99% of the football lineman do. But you are worried about the 1%?
If only 1% of female college distance runners had an eating disorder, then I would agree with you that the question was fair game. However, the percentage is much higher. The first google result I found suggested eating disorder rates in female athletes around 50%. Even males are at 15%, so I don't think hassling male students about their weight is a great idea.
The pro level is completely different. I have no problem asking *adult* professional runners *relevant* questions about their bodies.
Katelyn said the word “damn.” She did not make a post, did not make a statement, did not accuse anybody of anything. Why are so many grown men unable to cope with the fact that an athlete had a mild negative reaction to a reporter’s comment? You guys are whining and crying as if the reporter is being sent to jail.
So well put. It was a stupid question. Tuohy's reaction was appropriate and also sufficient. No need to cancel the person or fine them or really do anything further. And no reason to freak out about Tuohy's reaction either.
I think leading a question with "I have followed you since X" comes from the position of having an inferiority complex....nobody actually cares, though he thinks people do.

Maybe. But in any case, what's wrong with following a high school runner? Lots of people follow Sadie Engelhardt and she's a high school sophomore.
NEVER comment on the appearance of female athletes. It's misogyny.
Even though people do it all the time with men. With men it's ok. But its body shaming if you notice anything about a woman's physical appearance.
No, it’s not misogyny. Most men and women like women, and have no reason to innately hate them. As for prejudice, there is no reason to think that commenting on an athlete’s body involves any sexism.
Misogyny is a stupid overused word, overused by the stupidfolk trying to hide their stupid. You are better than that.
What a terrible press conference. The women gave short responses to "not say anything," and the questions were all sophomoric.
"How are you going to deal with the hills."
Answer: I’ll go up the hills and then come down the hills; practically what Valby responded.
Maybe the reporters were expecting one of them to answer that they’ll pull out their secret plutonium light saber jet pack that they’ve been honing just for these hills all Fall.
Reporter speaking to Valby that he's "noticed she put on a bit of muscle."
Tuohy's reaction (she says "dam*") is priceless.
She's clearly disgusted that the reporter went there.
I can't imagine being offended by being told "you look like you put on some muscle."
for the hobby jogger/journalist crowd...
1) You look very fit.... translation. You look lean and skinny
2) You look like you put on some muscle.... Translation. You look like you put on some weight.
Isn't it obvious? You have to treat young ladies differently than young men. Men go through puberty and mature and gain testosterone and strength and lung capacity, Ladies go through puberty and often its a different process. The guy is an idiot to ask that.
Reaction by Tuohy was absolutely priceless. Not just her saying "damn" loud enough for everyone to hear it but also her facial reaction. Then she just stared at the guy in disbelief that he could be stupid and rude enough to say that.
Also, I don't know where the talk about Valby "putting on muscle" is coming from. She is lean and fit, that is all. Emma Coburn looks a helluva lot more ripped than just about any distance runner and even she does not have much muscle. She is very lean and very fit so her abs are a serious six-pack and she has quite a bit of vascularity in her legs and arms but this does not mean she has a lot of muscle. I had the opportunity to talk to her for a few minutes a couple years ago and was surprised that she was as thin as she was. She's a world champion distance runner, so it is only natural that she is light weight. You are not going to see a female with FloJo muscles winning any 5000m races.
I watched this again and it really appears as what Katelyn is conveying when she says damn is a sense of bemusement and subtle mockery of this questioner as if she is saying “you are a geek. Why the hell are you paying close attention to her body? Like get a life you geek.” She obviously wasn’t going to say it but more than being creeped out I think she was saying are you serious? You cannot be serious!
