Judging from the replies we see that tribal solidarity trumps right/wrong/common sense...
Some people in our society simply have different values...
I don't know why this is getting thumbs down. Yesterday I heard Kendrick Perkins use Bobby Knight throwing a chair on the court back in 1985 as an example of how this wasn't that bad and how he seen "way worse on a college basketball court". Really? Have you? What was worse than this? I've seen players actually playing the game get into it and throw punches. I've seen coaching jawing at each other almost nose to nose, pointing fingers (Georgia v Missouri) - but I have never seen a coach throw a hand/fist and or need to be held back like a crazy person as they try and rush the pile (to do what btw).
Well, the Malice in the Palace for one was worse. So was the Kansas - K State game where de Sousa grabbed a stool and wanted to use it as a weapon.

People will always point to another incident to justify why the one being discussed is ok. Because the old saying of two wrongs make right.

Both those incidents involved players who were actually out on the court, were fatigued, having multiple points of contact with each other, chipping at each other etc etc. I'm not condoning the behavior but there are extenuating factors involved.
These don't apply to Juwan Howard, period.
Furthermore, the coach - especially at collegiate level is the leader and an important role model for young men and women who are still essentially kids and are still developing and actualizing into adults. Silvio De Sousa was 22 years old when that incident happened. Most of the players in the Palace incident were under the age of 30 (Wallace was 30, Artest 25, O'Neil 26, Steven Jackson 26). Howard is held to a much higher standard as a coach and 49 year old human being and should be.
And he should have been fired but wasn't because the current social climate is cotton-wooling and giving free passes to previously "disadvantaged" candidates based not on the individual but the collective whole, which basically makes a mockery of "equality" and turns it more into a period of corrective retribution that will ultimately do everyone a disservice long term.
Once again based on this logic you should be able to just punch someone in the face for any perceived misgiving you have against them? Bumped into me at the supermarket? - "they started it". Cut me off on the freeway? - "they started it".
I can not even believe that in this day and age, any "writer" - even for a sh$tty online website would even default to the "they started it" argument. The same crew that are bleeding hearts for "progress" support a key lever in stunting progress which is petty retribution based on "who starts it" - like a dog chasing it's own tale. My god.
