Best run of the day for me was Sydney Rubio Huntington Beach. 5th at SS D1 finals 3rd at D1 State meet 17:26 and 6th fastest time of the day. Going to NXN. By the way have I mentioned she is a freshman. The future looks bright.
There's a good chance that Sadie Engelhardt and Chiara Dailey will turn down NXN for Foot Locker, which would free up spots for two more girls to go to NXN.
However, the next two girls in line, Jaelyn Williams and Gioana Lopizzo, are from the San Diego area. Like Chiara Dailey, they might want to stay home and run Foot Locker, which is kind of a home course for them.
Does anyone know what the deadline is for them to accept or reject their NXN invitations?
According to Rich Gonzalez, Sadie Engelhardt has accepted her invite to go to NXN and won't be going to Foot Locker, Chiara Dailey has turned down her NXN invite in order to run in the Foot Locker West Regional next weekend, and Jaelyn Williams will be taking Dailey's place at NXN.
According to NXN, Gioana Lopizzo has been offered an at large invite to NXN. Not sure if she has accepted or not.
The list seems pretty solid but I also have a sleeper teammate who only really threw down times during Junior year track season and was sick for almost a month during cross country NCS and State meet so was pretty much out of the picture.
Lucas Cohen, 4:09 in the 1600m and 9:00 in the 3200m with no specializing, could maybe pull something off during senior XC season. Getting huge base mileage in this summer and our new coach is more freeform so workouts might be better/more personalized...
Any chance?
he looks pretty solid but.. He had a really fast teammate to help him train last track season, which he doesn't have this season. I think he could beat half of these guys if he stays 100% focused on running, training goes well, and he isn't just a "track guy" but can also perform well in cross.
However, if he has a lot of untapped potential he should be aiming to rep California by winning either nxn or footlocker. I am pretty sure Parra and Noonan have that potential and will be shooting for a win at either race. I would say it's more important to be psychologically and physically ready after the state meet. A lot of runners get too excited for woodbridge and can't keep up the momentum all the way too the national meet.
Well... It kinda turned out how we'd hoped for and Lucas really threw down the gauntlet today... wow... 14:45... Still mind-bogglingly quick considering his previous race times but I knew he hadn't really went 100% at any of his races yet this year. Crazy happy for him and am ready to be surprised at his NXN performance.
And the years just keep getting faster too... Just a few years ago/LAST year sub 15 at woodward states was the holy grail reserved for Newbury Park and a select few higher division legends. This year it was the minimum requirement to win ANY division, and D4 was LOADED with four runners under 14:50!
Jacob Brown really stepped up for Great Oak. 15:17, finishing right behind their #1 guy Rodriguez (who the other Brown usually finishes with). This is also his first year on varsity.
Next year, when the other Brown comes back, it wouldn’t be surprising if Great Oak is back to #1. This team has some nice depth.
First FR boy was 96th in the merge. First SR girl was outside top 10?!
For the girls, I see one in top 10: 6 RUBIO, Sydney 9 Huntington Beach -S-1 17:26.5 141.17 141 Last year there were two.
This years boys FR were slightly better than last year: 2022 120 Benjamin Fernandez 9 Matilda Torres (CS) 15:53.75 173.08 173 199 Dallin Harrington 9 San Clemente (SS) 16:11.40 167.20 167
2023 95 ANTONIO, Aidan 9 Woodbridge -S-2 15:36.9 176.70 177 144 BAY, Blake 9 Fresno Christian -C-5 15:48.7 172.77 173 167 OGILVIE, Matthew 9 Jesuit -SJ-2 15:52.8 171.40 171
It is true that CA hasn't had a superstar freshman boy recently like many states have had, but each class seems loaded by the time they are seniors.

Sorry, I see now you mentioned SR girls. Same answer though. This year there was 1, last year there was 2.

Yes, as a native of Santa Barbara, it is indeed their first EVER boys cross country title. They have been flying under the radar until it counts, and it was strategic. Their coach tells me they are a great group of guys who do what they are told and stayed committed. Led by Andreas Dybdahl (UCLA bound) who beat FastHorse at last years State 1600, and then took him down at the southern section finals (I hear on these boards FastHorse is hurt). Still, a clutch runner I am told. Just under the elite guys it seems. Also, all 7 boys ran PRs
