Monte-Carlo - Kenenisa Bekele and Tirunesh Dibaba, two of the sport’s biggest stars, will headline their respective 5000m races when the six meeting IAAF Golden League series commences in Oslo on 2 June, two weeks from today with the Exxon Mobil Bislett Games.

The young Ethiopian stars, just 23 and 20 respectively, have already collectively amassed 18 World titles on the track and in cross country in their short careers, and at Oslo’s Bislett Games, will begin their pursuit of one of the few prizes missing from their large trophy cases – a slice of the $1 million IAAF Golden League Jackpot

This year there are eleven designated Golden League Jackpot events, and athletes who win at any five of the six meetings will share a purse of $500,000, while an additional $500,000 is on offer to be shared by athletes who succeed in winning their event a sixth time.

Men – 3000m / 5000m

As has become customary since emerging on the international scene in 2003, Bekele, also the world record holder at 5000 and 10,000m and Olympic champion in the longer event, will be starting as the man to beat. But Oslo organisers have assembled a solid field of challengers who have Golden League aspirations of their own.

Leading the list is 22-year-old Isaac Songok who is off to a strong start in 2006. The Kenyan beat a strong field in the 3000 last weekend in Doha in 7:28.97, the fastest in the world thus far this year. At last year’s Golden Gala Golden League meeting in Rome, the Kenyan was victorious in the 5000, producing his first sub-13 minute performance with his 12:52.29 clocking.

Also racing in Oslo will be reigning World champion Ben Limo, who raced to a bronze medal earlier this year at the Commonwealth Games; 20-year-old Boniface Kiprop of Uganda, the Commonwealth 10,000m champion; and Olympic 10,000m bronze medallist Zersenay Tadesse of Eritrea. Not to be discounted is Bekele’s younger brother Tariku, who may finally be ready to jump from behind his brother’s shadow

i was wrong to compare haile with Kenenisa.

haile consistancy was amusing ( in 1998 he won the golden jackpot) this he could not make it from the begining.

In a race barely under 13 minutes Kenenisa will be subject to defeat when there are 1500m man with 3:30 speed and great endurance. Isaac Songok was world ranked in the 1500m a couple of years ago and this year dipped under 7:29 early in the year for 3000m-so he is big talent. Kenenisa for some reason doesn't attack the 5000m like he does the 10000m. I've yet to see him go with an incredible long haul in the 5000m like he ups the ante in the 10000m-he doesn't even try it in the 5000m. Kenenisa keeps making the same mistake not attempting to burn the kick off INCREDIBLE 1500m runners in the 5000m. He wants til the less than a lap to go with the pace barely under 13 minutes and try to outkick 3:30 guys-not gonna happen (he needs to work on his 1500m speed -OR- try a long drive from 1100-1500m out).

I agree Isaac Songok has an incredible kick in the 5000m and great ability and unless Kenenisa overcome his failing tactics in the 5000m he will fall short several more times to various 5000m men. Kenenisa is the world record holder and in each of the last 2 years he's run AT LEAST 10 seconds faster than the 2nd fastest man- Kenenisa's major downfall in the 5000m is his tactics.

Kenenisa's coach Tolosa kotu is not a kind of person like Dr Wlodemeskel Kostre in which case the later is well educated in physical education in hungay ??? and he is the one for the success of the great haile. Dr woldemiskel trainig is scientfic.

Kenenisa always fear before the race you read form his face. Haile confidence was exceptional.

Any ways i am happy to see issac great performance and as you said issac dominace will continue in the middle distance

Atletisma 2003 was the only time..he ran 52 seconds... this time he only run 58 seconds... there was something wrong with kenenisa this time around... songook would still probably win this race.. but not by much.

Kenenisa will come back and destroy..and i mean destroy songook.

I know Songok runs 1500 not 5000 in Paris (no thoughts of his coach/manager to go for crazy 6 GL wins) but tell Bekele to be ready for rematch in Rome. He had better come up with more than he did in Oslo overwise he will have no chance. By the way, if you saw Songok running the easiest 7:28 in windy Doha you would have new respect for this new Kenyan star. He is a sub-7:25 guy; far better than Chebii/Eliud/Limo ever were...

Taking into account that runners like Kipchoge, Choge, Songok, Chebii e.t.c. are in top shape, Bekele has to run a very fast race if he has to win. He has lost to all of htese runners with the exception of Choge in the 5K. Chebii also beat in in 3k about 3 years ago.

Anything slower will always see him losing at the kick. THat said, I think Bekele had something not going for him today. He looked tired with about 2 laps to go. That said, he may be down but he is not out. THis guy will surely come back and folks better be ready for him.
