They should hire Greg Metcalf.
They should hire Greg Metcalf.
The assistants....SUCK!
Lock at the results! XC team was stress fracture U
Throws coach is solid though.
You should really do some research (?)
Over the past few years the Jumps program has been at least equal to any top program in the PAC12. Multiple All Americans, conference top 3 finishers and conference winners indoors and out. Cal has been as successful in the Triple Jump as USC has in the High Jump, and Oregon in the Long Jump for example.
Almost all freshman come in an improve their first year and that's not easy to do in an academic environment. He's also doing it with very few athletes and I doubt that is his choice.
Throws and jump always do well but sprints has also had a very strong year with most athletes achieving PRs already.
The weak link is obvious but definitely not the field events or sprints.

Stop posting about Cal, it's a NOTHING program for reasons beyond the ability of any given coach. It's Rice on the West Coast, USF and Chico look down on Cal.
Have to quibble with your statement. Coach Newman is a fine jumps coach, but while both Oregon in the long jump (Jenna Prandini) and USC in the high jump (Randall Cunningham) have produced National Champions, Cal's triple jumpers have not made it to that level.
The reality is Cal is a field events school despite every single head coach (except Huffins which is ironic) in the last 40 years trying to make it a distance school, middle distance school, sprints school, cross country school... the biggest mismanagement of resources in the NCAA! Just look at how many multi eventers, throwers and jumpers they've had win NCAA championships and get All Americas versus all the other events... I'm pretty sure the current director is putting the bare minimum into those events. It's a damn joke and hopefully is rectified by the new regime... JUST LOOK AT THE RESULTS!!!

This must explain why the admin is only known to be talking almost exclusively to young, P5 asst distance coaches right? And why the job description states "commensurate with experience" under salary. Because of all their resources. And looks like they've had the same distance coach for most of the last 40 years.
Cal will hire an SEC school associate head coach. Field events is the way to go.
Name some names.

If you knew you'd know. And this Associate Head Coach from the SEC is fine and could do a great job, but do they realize they will be working with the opposite demographic at Cal with the opposite resources?
Well judging by the pac 12 being mostly distance head coaches. I doubt Cal will hire a glorified recruiting coordinator. So they can continue to compete with the Colorado’s, Stanford’s, and Washington’s for the same recruits. The job description looks like they want someone who knows what they are doing.
Travis Geophert??
Mike Gipson will get the job.
Rumor out of the IC4A meet this weekend is Robyn Johnson of BU is going to Cal. She went to high school in Berkley.
Robyn was actually a coach at Cal while Huffins was on the team. I believe she applied for the director job either when Erv Hunt retired or when Huffins left. Word on the street was that she sued the department for gender discrimination. Not sure how that would go over in her interview this time...
Interviews have not started yet. Rumor, Robyn did apply along with two Cal Assistants.

That's right! I forgot about her going after them for that! I wonder if Cal did? Anyway, the street word out of Big West's was that Latanya Sheffield is taking her talents to Berkeley and setting up a staff. Hmm, I wonder what Cal is looking for in their head coach ha!
What has Sheffield done to run Cal-Berkeley? Just wondering.
The only requirements are the right skin color and gender. Old white men are being replaced by crazy liberals with people that fit their agenda and quotas. Ability means nothing now.
