A former teammate was moving to altitude and no longer needed his tent. He offered to sell it to me for $1000, so I bought it.

I don't have a good or straight answer for this. I didn't race the 5K often and didn't like running it. When I did hop in a 5K, I didn't taper and basically treated it as a very hard training run. Also, there are just too many variables involved (suspiciously short/long courses, net downhills, inability to wear spikes on roads, extra time spent pushing through the crowds, etc.)
If I seriously raced a track 5K when I was in peak condition, my time would probably have been in the mid or high 19's.
