NxN is useless. In the NCAA many, many people care who wins and who is tenth. Other than people at the high school, who really cares what team win NxN? Do you think colleges look to see if the team won or placed high?
I am confident colleges can get a very good idea of a kid's ability based on where he places at NXN, so I'm not buying the recruiting argument for why you would choose Footlocker.
What WOULD impact my feelings as a college coach was that a kid chose individual glory over his teammates, and I would be hesitant to bring a kid with that value system into my program.
I would hope that after 4 years of running with these teammates, with 4 years in a top D1 program and plenty of time for individual accolades ahead of him, in a sport where true team opportunities are really limited, he would choose going to Portland with his boys over being able to say he went to Footlocker.
Is he gonna skip relays too? Refuse to double? There are real and frequent conflicts between individual and team goals, and I think when you're choosing to be a part of a team there are obligations that come with that.
