It is staffed by knowledgeable collegiate and post-collegiate runners, and they really do want to put people in the right shoes. No, they do not have medical degrees, but I have a doctor for that, I don't expect the guys getting paid $12 an hour to fix my medical problems.
what Philly area running store are you talking about, may I ask? Are you talking about the Chester County Running Store?
That's definitely a good store--don't live close enough to get there very often.
Could also recommend Bryn Mawr Running Co.--great staff, wide selection of shoes including racing flats and lightweight shoes (recently got a pair of each there and the owner who is a fast runner himself also gives very sound advice based on lots of experience).
Philly in general seems to have a good selection of stores with knowledgeable people: besides the above named ones, I also like Philly Runner, Jenkintown Running Company, the Athlete's Closet, Runaway Success, and Rittenhouse Sports (this last doesn't have a web site or treadmill, but the owner takes customer service seriously, spends time with each customer, will order special order shoes, and has let me run outside the store a few minutes to try a particular shoe).
I went to a running store down in Madison once and Solinsky was my salesperson. The guy knew nothing about running, I could tell he was way too big for it...
