I did run in the AAU '70 race. It snowed/rain/sleeted all day on Friday as we drove from Bloomington to Chicago. As I recall, they found a dead body either the evening before or the day of the race on the course-and of course raising the joke that he/she wasn't the only one to die on that course that day.
I can't recall what I placed, but it was not memorable.
Another Drake story-we ran there my Freshman year. I'd never run more than 3 miles without stopping before my Freshman cross season, and even by April was only able to handle ~ 50 miles/week.
I remember being amazed as I watched Shorter and Batchelor go 1-2 in at least the 6 mile on Saturday, I believe, and maybe the 3 mile the prior (can't remember), but whatever-they ran away with the race on Saturday-and then as I got off the bus on Saturday afternoon back to the Hotel from the Stadium, they had just run over from their race and I heard Shorter say something like "glad we did that, it made 120 miles for my week!" I thought "welcome to the Big Time, Hayeser!"
