The USA is a selfish narcissist capitalist culture. Of course we are going to lose the one aspect of an individual sport that asks you to cooperate and work together for the common good. Our systems are not designed to encourage cooperation. Once again we are showing the world our society's greatest weakness, and I am sure they are taking note.

US basketball team is the same way. Sure, they may win gold, but they should be beating each and every team they play by 30-40+.
There is no concept of how to use teammates to better themselves and how to work together. It’s all me me me and personal legacies and all that nonsense.
That's not an excuse. I've coached 4x100 m relays for years. I was always able to shuffle guys in and out whenever necessary. They had two days notice. They could easily got on the track and worked this out. Kenny went way too early. But even worse was Fred Kerly's hand off. He was jogging and looked back looked like a 4x4 exchange. USA track and Field would win this every year if they would take the guys who got fourth fifth and 6th at the trials along with the best starter. Absolute joke 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣
Ya know, maybe the USA ought to just bag the very idea of entering a men's 4 x 1 team.
Mostly kidding, of course, but not entirely kidding. Ah mean hail, if they aren't going to give enough of a Scheiße to get the event sussed by thoroughly practicing with every possible combination of team members, why do they bother??? Having the fastest people but failing to get enough experience is a disaster in waiting, as history clearly demonstrates.

Wrong, bro. The 100m is a selfish, narcissistic culture (capitalism has nothing to do with it). US 100m runners are the problem, not the USA.
Insane, was Kerley originally going to do leg 2 or 3?
Coaching mistake for changing order if they did.
Second big relay mistake (4 x 400 prelim was bad-just not this bad)
Why not put the sub in on the final leg, have Bednarek anchor (for Lyles) and keep Kerley at #2?
Lots of politics and egos are involved in selecting US Olympic Relay Team members for the final.
There is a great amount of perceived prestige and honor associated with being the anchor leg on the 4 x1, Usually the fastest runner gets to run last. If the team wins it is the anchor leg that breaks the tape and gets additional camera time and exposure doing that and as they celebrate after the finish.
So with Lyles out Kerley, as 2nd fastest US runner in the Olympic 100m final, was moved to anchor to replace Lyles, and you can bet he lobbied for it also. That changed the running order.
Bednarek was placed on the team for the final as he was the third fastest US runner (he finished 7th in the Olympic 100m final) and you can bet he lobbied to run in the final. That further changed the whole team and the running order.
Had Lyles not become sick, both he and Bednarek would have newly appeared on the team just for the final. Credit to him for putting his ego aside and not competing in the 4 x 100 relay final. (But remember he was also planting ideas to be potentially placed on the 4 x400 team in the final...).
It takes a little more effort, practice and brainpower to effectively be on a relay team as opposed to an individual event, The regular failures of US relay teams to successfully complete baton exchanges reflects badly on US coaches, relay athletes and their system.

The runners are not the problem. The relay management/coach is.

Fred knew they were DQd. You watch the race as it's going and knew it was over when Kenny stopped at the end of the exchange zone. Can't blame Fred for this.
That combo wasn’t finishing first but at least they wouldn’t look so embarrassing. They need to practice often. They need to obligate that the top sprinters go to World Relays. You need reps in competition. No way they do this though. Let’s be honest though, some of these guys are not situationally smart. Kerley cannot handle two handoffs. King Fu Ken was not even close. They barely had a plan A and nothing beyond that. The mixed relay didn’t account for Bol and now the men’s 4x4 has a teenager flop, Norman a shell of himself. At least Norwood can gain confidence from his massive split.
