I think the headline is a little over the top. The reality is she needed to be very good to win this race,. She was far from very good but I think some are seeing that she ran 10.71 at the Trials and then 10.87 tonight and are overracting. We need to consider wind.
Correcting for wind, Sha'Carri ran 10.86 today and 10.76 at the Trials in Eugene. Alfred ran the equivalent of 10.71 today. So if Sha'Carri runs like she did at World last year (10.65 into -0.8) she winds but Sha'Carri has only run the equiavlent of sub-10.70 a handful of times (2-3?). I know she in 2021 on May 9she ran 10.77 into a 1.7.
It seems to me that Sha'Carri for some reason wasn't in shape at the beginning of the year. If you cant break 23 seconds in a 200 in April, it's kind of a miracle she was even contending for gold, right?
It is not an over reaction. Your analysis is quite bad.
While Richardson has only run sub 10.7 a handful of times, Alfred had never run a sub 10.78 before. Thus on paper, Richardson should have won quite easily given her performance at Worlds last year as well.
For someone of Richard's talent and potential, to run 10.87 is a mediocre time for her in any condition except for a prelim round.
My knowledge of sprinting is little. How much did Richardson lose at the start? As an established athlete, can she inprove her starts somehow? Practice? Drills? Focus? Or is it a you got it or you don't thing?
It is not so much the start, even though it wasn't very good, but how you finish. While her start was bad, she did not hit her usual speeds. She looked sluggish. You could see the nerves and fear in her eyes as she was getting into the blocks.
Carl Lewis was not the best starter, but he was the best finisher.
What’s wrong with hyping the reigning world champion as a contender for gold?
I didn’t make any guarantees about LA. I said there’s a good chance she’ll be there.
For lesser mortals, but not if you are the overwhelming favorite.
Would you be saying the same if Mondo won silver jumping only 5.80 while the winner jumped 5.90?
That’s the thing. I don’t think she was a Mondo-level favorite. She was the favorite, but not a Mondo-level favorite. This loss is disappointing, but losing to a genuine star like Alfred is not shocking in the way a Mondo loss would be.
I meant what I said. Nobody celebrates harder than Richardson when she wins. And nobody pouts harder when they lose, as evidenced by her skipping all press because she doesn’t want to answer for her performance or for the country she represents. Play on the world stage, address the world stage. Grow up, because you have people looking up to you.
A good majority will make the lap around the track with their flag, but Richardson rage celebrates just as hard as I did when I won Donut Dash 5K at age 36.
Richardson makes the win more about herself as opposed to the gold medalist who took her bib off and celebrated her COUNTRY immediately and it’s refreshing to see. Now tell me which celebration is more respectful?

Richardson was down .08 out of the blocks, Lost another .07 to Alfred in the first 35m, and then raced her EVEN the last 65m..
Richardson has always been a poor starter and losing the first 35m (to the reigning World Champ at 60m) was no surprise. Giving away .15 in the first third of the race, however, is suicide. Against the best sprinters, you will not make that up. To her credit, Alfred gave nothing back.
Silver is not a failure. Just a disappointment. If Richardson cannot improve that start, Gold will be tough to come by.
She was easily the class of the field apart from Alfred. Turns out Alfred is a killer. She won it. Richardson didn’t choke, just got beat.
She ran 10.87 when she’s in 10.6 shape. Rain let up. Almost no wind. Wet track doesn’t affect that much. It was a choke. You can see it right out of the blocks. She froze. Literally.
She needed to execute a near perfect race to win. It was not close to that. She has been struggling with her start all year. In the trials it didn't matter because she is just faster than the rest of the field.
Not getting out of the blocks quickly has nothing to do with talent. It's a mental error, so in that sense it is a "choke". But even with just a good start she probably still ends up with Silver.
