While that Albanian family went through a lot of adversities, I assume none of them were based on race or skin color.
A Nigerian family or a Taiwanese family may have fewer adversities overall, but they have race-related adversities that the Albanian family does not have to experience.
Of course the professor should not have reprimanded him, but rather used it as a teaching moment to explain there are many reasons people might have privilege and race is only one of them.
“For example, in the United States, Nigerian-Americans are among the most successful immigrant groups, topping the charts in a wide array of fields. According to the Washington-based (MPI), Nigerians in the United States are the most educated immigrant group, with 61 percent holding at least a bachelor’s degree, “compared with 31 percent of the total foreign-born population and 32 percent of the US-born population.”
I agree with a lot of this, but I do think the "black disadvantage" from decades ago still effects life today. White people were able to accumulate property, wealth etc decades ago and that has a snowball effect. The biggest disadvantage black people have today is class/wealth related and not racism/blatant discrimination. Affirmative action and DEI are a somewhat racist attempt to correct this, but it's politically unpalatable and not feasible with the super class of Asian immigrants.
I get most of that and don't disagree. But that -- let's call it "class privilege" -- doesn't encompass anywhere near the population of white people that "white privilege" is applied (which is everyone who is considered white).
I think what you are talking about is "generational wealth" which really does not happen that much. I'm on the high end of middle age, have led a busy life, and have met thousands of people by now, and I can only think of one guy I know who inherited a fortune to where he never has to work again. I know maybe a handful of people who were handed or inherited a sizeable amount of money, and a decent amount of people who grew up in a wealthy household (you could call them "spoiled" or "privileged"). But the large majority of white (and black) people I've known were like me and my parents and everyone else in my neighborhood -- broke after paying bills, always worrying about money and the next set of bills, and with little ways to change that other than working harder. Basically, I think "white privilege" is an artifact and "class privilege" is not a significant concern.
There's a lot of people who fall somewhere between paycheck to paycheck and generational wealth, mostly white and Asian. Bankers, lawyers, engineers who pay a lot in taxes and have a healthy retirement savings but aren't leaving their children anywhere close to "never have to work money." Lots of Letsrunner are in that category. My parents sort of fall into this category now but it wasn't a given for while, but they paid like 75% of my college tuition and saved like $15k to contribute to my wedding (among many other instances they've helped me). It's a massive privilege that I don't take for granted, but I will have to work the rest of my life and work very hard to achieve what they achieved and give my (future) kids what they gave me (doesn't help that it's literally harder to do now financially). There are very few black families that have this level of privilege, and I do think that the racism in our nation's history played a prominent role in that. Libs have a tendency to take this too far and blow it out of proportion, but I don't think it's really debatable that hundreds of years of racism shaped how society looks today.

Depends on what policy you are talking about, but in general that is just wrong. In any system with finite resources, you are in zero-sum. Changing a rule to someone's benefit, will not get you out of zero-sum.
So would agree that depriving minorities of equal rights for the first 200 years of the country’s existence created in imbalance in favor of whites. In other words a privilege, a white privilege.
Which countries on earth didn't show favoritism to the people that founded the country over outsiders?
White countries are the only countries on the entire planet which give privilege to minorities. There's a reason all of these non-white people are desperate to get into the white countries. If the west was as awful as you spoiled twits think it is none of these people would be desperate to get here.

You act as if the whites came over here with the intention of improving the lives of non-whites.
I’m sure the Natives and imported brown people may disagree. The country was founded on exploitation. Recent history doesn’t change that.
White privilege isn’t us vs them. It’s a recognition that white life in America isn’t as burdened by the past inequality as black and brown lives are.

White privilege isnt a thing anymore. Its over. The past inequality(?) that others were burdened by (insert "huh?" cat meme) is in the past, long gone, it no longer exists.
All benefits and advantages are given to the new majority, formerly known as minority, which is what whites now are.
And forget white women, still the bottom of the barrel with nothing left for them.
white privilege is getting blamed for all the things Jews do that are bad (they called white then), and getting no credit for things Jews do well (Nobel Prize winner, a Jew!)
White privilege, like wind. Cannot see it, but feel its touch. Your father, school good, job honest...but maybe door open easier because skin color right. Same wind blow others away, just because skin different.
You, strong, pay own debts. Good! But maybe path not so steep, not so rocky, because of who you are, not just what you do.
White privilege not mean life easy, no struggle.
Means...some struggles not yours to carry. Like walking with sun at back, not facing the wind. Understand?
White privilege today is the same thing that Jewish privilege was in Europe 100 years ago. The Germans were angry that Jews were doing better than them and projected their own insecurities onto them blaming the Jews for their own failures, and then we had this thing called the Holocaust. Same thing is playing out today with whites, and Jews and Asians to a lesser extent. What's so strange to me is how so many people seem to have no awareness whatsoever that this is all projection and is something humans have done around the world for thousands of years. It's the same story as Kane and Abel. Abel was successful, Kane was resentful and jealous, and so Kane wanted to destroy Abel. Just like Nazi Germans with Jews, just like modern young dummy libs wanting to "eat the rich," just like people hating on successful whites. In every case throughout history when a society has attacked its most successful subgroup, it has brought about tremendous hardship and suffering for everyone as the most successful people are so because of the services they provide that society. Don't want rich people? Okay, no more doctors, engineers, skilled laborers, professors, inventors, etc. If you want equity, go move to Venezuela. Everyone is equal there, and life sucks.

Young one speaks of fire and ashes. Memory long, like shadow of mountain at sunset.
Yes, jealousy burns hot, twists truth like flame bends metal. Blame falls on those who rise, like tall tree catches lightning strike. This pattern, old as the hills, repeats.
But...fire not only thing in world. Rain falls too, brings new growth. White privilege, like heavy coat in winter. Keeps some warm, others shiver outside. To see this, not hate, but understanding.
Book holds wisdom, good to read. But also look around, with open eyes. Many stories, many truths. Don't get lost in one book, find the whole library of life.
World not simple, like two colors on paper. More like...tapestry, many threads woven together. Each thread has place, each pull makes pattern change.
Understand this, then find your own place to weave

By and large it is a term used to justify racist policies against white people that primarily impacts poor whites.
No it's not. The fact that you see policies that benefit minorities as racist policies against whites, shows an extreme level of ignorance. If a minority benefits a white doesn't suffer. It isn't a zero sum game.
What do you think DEI programs are? When a bank only takes 100 analysts in a class and 60% are going to be DEI (either female or black / Hispanic) the remaining, more qualified on average, people have less spots
The difference is most of the white kids have a family business and their parents home to fall back on after not getting the job while most black kids (equally qualified) have no pre existing household or family wealth to fall back on at all. They’re more likely to fall down a slippery slope of what his thread has called “black disadvantage”
these outcomes aren’t the same every time- there’s white kids that fall back on nothing and black kids that fall back on wealth- but we’re talking about averages here.
The function of DEI does have an expiration date when black people are more than just 13% of the population and an even smaller percentage of wealthy working class. However that time is definitely not here yet.
also as a general statement to any white privilege deniers reading this, I really wish you guys would stop acting like after slavery there wasn’t Jim Crow laws, continued racism, a civil rights movement just 35 years before the turn of the millennium, and still a ton of racists in all corners of society today. No one’s saying things aren’t better from when black people were literal slaves in this country, we’re just saying they definitely haven’t stopped being burdened by its effects.
the negative culture that black people are known for (crime, fathers leaving their children, etc) is a domino result originating back to slavery. If you can’t recognize this, then you really have to foot in this argument.

Why was their single motherhood rate much lower (about 20%, I believe) in the 1950s? Did modern rap that glorifies crime and this exist then?

Being successful does not mean one does not face adversity. If that were the case, antisemitism would not exist.
What professions are Jews kept out of in America? What colleges don't accept them? What towns and neighborhoods exclude them? Are Jews underrepresented in politics? Mistreated by the Justice system? Are lots of Jews living in poverty? Does the average Jewish family have far less net worth than other Americans? What systemic repression do Jews face in America?
Sorry to distract from the black bashing

My dad’s white American ancestry goes back 300 years. He graduated from a public school. Then volunteered to join the military and served seven years. He left the military and worked a crappy factory job that started at 10 dollars an hour until retirement. There was always food on the table and he was always a loving father.
I went to public school and then to college. I received not a single cent from my parents towards college. It took 15 years but I payed off my college loans by myself.
I’m as white as they come. What white privilege do I have?
What white privilege do you have?
You have the privilege of not having your race being factored into assessments of your person, by a large swath of the population.
That's white privilege.
This is, of course, untrue. The lazy and uneducated judge being white as some sort of oppressor while the intelligent judge being white as evidence of a higher evolution. Even positive judgements are judgements and positive stereotypes are just as bad as negative ones.
