…and Nico Young, who was a Soph, ran 9:26 for 38th in the rated category
…and what was the winning time in 2018?
8:50.95
(Basically 30th on Saturday)
Supershoes have much greater effect on teenage boys than world class men.
The effect is HUGE.
Already in College, the effect is less than in HS.
16th in 2018 indoor 3000m was 7:53.3
16th in 2024 was 7:43.8
…so 9.5 seconds. correct for 3200m instead of 3000m and you have 10s for 3200m.
I assume that it shrinks a little more at the world class level.
I would have to use the 5000m 2023 vs 2018
12:56.0 for 16th in 2023 vs 13:07 for 16th in 2018 (remember when you were world class when you ran 13:07).
So only 11 seconds over 5000m (7 seconds equivalent over 3200m). I am however expecting better than 12:56.0 for 16th in 2024. We already see that shoe technology has improved from 2023 to 2024.

BTW: 6 years earlier (2012), 16th was 7:52 in College
5 years earlier (2013) for world class, 16th was 13:05
So do not attribute improvement to simple passage of time
The majority of top Arcadia performances are concentrated in the past few years (2021-2024), with 2024 having the most entries (22) and 2023 the fastest average time (8:43.36).
All sub-9:00 clockings over 3,200m and 2 miles over the past 25 Arcadia Invitationals (note, these are times the clock stopped under 9:00 for the athlete, not converted marks that 'would have been' sub-9).

Every coach will tell you that when they have guys do workouts in regualar trainers, the times that the workouts indicate ends up being significantly faster today with superspikes than their athletes had historically run.

In 2018, Drew Bosley ran 9:59.04 for 16th. 17th was Strangio in 9:00.2. Further back was Dylan Jacobs, who was a senior at the time, in 9:06 for 23rd.
Super shoes = 2s per lap for HS (3200) runners.
It has been proven that supershoes improve women performance more than men. It’s therefore logical that it will improve HS boy performance more than Olympic calibre men runners
I had one of my athletes who's a 840s 3200 meter runner on 5 different spikes and only 2 were "super" shoes while doing a 10*400 meter rep workout. He rotated all of them and he still average 60-61 in each rep so I find this whole shoe thing to possibly be a gimmick. Maybe it helps a bit but to say two seconds per lap is crazy!
When posters estimate the effect for shoes, they don’t acknowledge that it goes both ways. If the shoes result in a 10 second improvement, LV could have run 8:19. 11 seconds for Bekele calculates to 12:16, or 4:00 pace. How do reconcile those times with your estimates?
How is that both ways? The opposite way would be slower. The simple answer is that the elite guys of the past would be faster with better shoes. You sound silly to suggest otherwise. My team runs the same workouts that my teams ran 20 years ago but I have had 5 guys break 9:10 in the past 3 years while I had none break 9:15 prior to that doing the same workouts in the same times. The only difference are their race day shoes. I can't be the only one who has real life data to compare.

Both ways mean before and after the new shoes. Again, how do you reconcile the ridiculous times that previous distance record holders would have theoretically have run with the new shoes? You suggest previous runners would have run faster? There’s absolutely no way LV could have run 8:19 or Bekele 4:00 minute mile pace for 5000m.
Your story about 9:15 and 9:00 kids could not be more irrelevant. There are always going to be variations in talent of the runners coming out for the team?
I’ll ask my question again, do you believe Bekele and LV could have run those times?
By Veronica, I guess you mean Lukas Vezbicas. The reason he didn’t achieve much after HS was because he suffered a career ending injury in a bike crash at age 19.
Yes!
sorry, autocorrect.
Verzbicas didn’t pursue running even before the crash.
No way to know without asking him, but I’m pretty sure he would have returned to running. When he tried to comeback from his injury, he initially focused on running.

The question at this point is simply:
Do the supershoes improve HS 3200m performance by 14 seconds, 15 seconds or 16 seconds?
...and is the greater improvement seen by HS 3200m runners (vs pro runners) simply due to the fact that they run slower (they basically run the 3200m at a pace similar to what Kipchoge runs his marathon) and the super spikes are optimized for 2:50/km pace, which is why we are not seeing the same % improvement in the HS 800m for example.
And to the poster about the ridiculous times the top guys would have posted if they had super spikes.
First, the faster you are the less help you’re going to get. The fastest guys ever are already very efficient and get maximum energy return from the track. That’s why they are so good (and perhaps a little outside help too… ahem).
But yeah, Bekele and Geb probably would have broken 12:30 in them. That wouldn’t have shocked me.
The brojos did the pre and post analysis on kipchoge in the marathon. Look that up.

LV maybe 8:25. Sure. Why not?
LV had all the help in the world to run that time. He was put in a professional race. Doesn't deserve to be put in a pedestal above the other runners on the all-time list.

Notice how 1600m and 800m times don't have nearly that level of depth nationally. Still few break 4 here and there over the years but not en mass like 27 under 8:50!
That tells me these kids are juiced on threshold, mileage and benefit from x% in economy gains from supershoes but it all falls apart the longer they intend to live near or below 60 second pace. That still needs more raw talent.
I think you also have to take into account some of the following:
1- alot of these boys have private coaches and mentors.... they may appear to run for their HS, but in reality they are private coached. Private coaches for high schoolers has multiplied and many now have personal mentors who guide them along in what to do in a race like arcadia
2- many of these boys have been running since very young ages... brought up in advanced usatf running clubs and teams and are advanced in running age.
3- many of 1 and 2 have wealthy parents who supply altitude tents, massages, regular pt sessions and high end supplements, etc. and yes Altitude tents!!
4- there are some hs with really good coaches ( Mark Wetmore started as a high school coach); however there are many hs coaches who overtrain their athletes and make a mess of the athletes and take no responsibility for it.
Many are trained like college athletes these days....
Running a 4 min mile is like a 8:32 2 mile. All these 8:50s are like 4:10 miles. And yeah the 2 mile is a bit more trainable that running 60mpw instead of 45 drops a lot of people from 20s/mile slower to more like 15s. We do see a ton more 3:58-4:02 than we used to but that is a vastly different talent level than 8:50.
The 800m is weird in that most kids(the sub 1:48 crowd) seem to be 400/800m runners. The training is no where near as simple as run some more miles. It could be cognitive bias but it always feels like you get more people with 1 crazy year and the struggles to repeat. See Flatt for the poster child…
You see any runners from class 2011 or even 2010 near his two mile mark? Looking at the performance lists now. There's a reason he was allowed in that race as a kid. Winning NXN and Footlocker in the same season put him above everyone. Sub 4 from the front in the rain/wind in a highschool only race look it up.
