I grew up near her. I have always been a fan but she is wealthy and privileged. I am wealthy and privileged. My brother got into drugs while attending Princeton. He is clean now but he created his problem. Runners coming from war torn countries have overcome things. We create our own hurdles when life is too easy. She grew up rich and went to one if the best colleges in the world. Other medalists grew up in huts and they ran away from bullets while looking for their next meal.
She's a good runner and definitely did come from a well off background, but did she really go one of the best colleges in the world? Looking at other schools with good teams, she didn't go to Stanford
I love how a thread about a runner being injured turns into a thread comparing colleges. Some things will never change on Letsrun.
The entertainment element of athletic performance is much less when watching people like Molly Seidel. Criticism of each should be reasonably proportional.
If you think some over the top criticism of an athlete by a handful people people on an obscure message board isn't proportional to the criticism received by an NFL quarterback, you'd be right. Olympic athletes have it WAY easier than mainstream athletes and it's not even close, especially when you consider proportionality. Get outside your bubble.
Astonished she's broken her patella running. Never heard of that before.
That's my question, I've never heard of that as an overuse injury. Granted she's always been willing to put in crazy miles, but it sure seems like it must have been an accident of some sort, no? Not to add to the speculation, but if anyone has an idea of how that type of injury occurs let us know.
I wonder where she goes from here. She has an impeccable engine but this can easily happen again in her next buildup. She’s chronically injured but races an event that requires high mileage…and ended up with a football injury. Does she have the speed to drop down in distance? Would that also be too aggressive on her body? I mean it seems that she’ll need to adapt to half her training on an alter-g alone. Tough spot here with no easy answers.
Sara Hall and Keira D'Amato must be doing back flips. As well as all of the long shots.
There were 7 studs most of the field wasn't touching - Aliphine Tuliamuk, Sara Hall, Molly Seidel, Keira D'Amato, Betsy Saina, Emily Sisson and Emma Bates. Now 2 of the 7 are out and a third has openly been struggling with an injury.
I don’t have strong feelings about Molly either way but it’s always disappointing when an athlete misses a big opportunity due to injury and there’s no doubt she would have made the race better.

Not what I wanted to hear but probably the best choice for her and i really wanted to see her in another Olympic marathon. Wishing her 100% recovery and the best in future major marathons.
The fact that the patellar tendon and the patella are injured makes it sound like an avulsion fracture from the tendon tearing away from the joint. Usually caused by overly tight quads and patellar maltracking. I think a patellar avulsion at the distal tibia is more common than at the actual patella though. I wish her a speedy and complete recovery, this sounds awful.
