Magis Miles last night: Sato ran 4:04.58 for the full mile to win the elite heat, Eddington in second with 4:05.50. Sato’s 4:03.14 for 1600 meters makes him the 4th fastest Illinois runner all time at the distance, behind just Lukas Verzbicas, Donald Sage, and Tom Sullivan of Evanston from 1961. Eddington’s 4:03.92 through 1600 makes him the 8th fastest Illinois runner all time at the distance. Banduwkala was also in the race but fell off the pace hard in the last few laps, only running 4:16.36 after a 68 second last lap. Sato will be running the 800 at both Brooks PR and New Balance, Eddington will be in the 4x8 and the mile at Nike (as will Philip Cupial). Excited for what Eddington can do at Nike, he’s never raced a mile with as good of competition as he’ll see at Nike. We got a glimpse of Sato’s best at Arcadia, but it’ll be fun to see how much he’s improved in the past 2 months too.
I’m a big fan of Sato tremendous kid. Illinois landed a good one with him. Excited to see what all the Illinois kids do in college. I anticipate some great things. Also this senior class leaves the Illinois distance running scene in a great position. This has to be the strongest class Illinois has had in a long time across all 3 classifications.
