I've said this for years on here and I'll say it again: Success in ultras correlates very highly with best marathon times. Yes, of course sometimes the 2:15 guy has a horrible meltdown and gets beat by the 2:25 or 2:30 guy. But generally they are destroying the 2:40 guy.
Sage gets routinely beat by "2:40 guy" at the 100 mile distance. What's his excuse? He's been a "MUT" runner and trained for it for YEARS now.
Most elite ultra runners understand they don't have the pure speed of a roadie. Here's the thing though, they don't let their ego cloud their reality. They just simply don't care. Maybe if these super fast roadies drop the ego and were more accepting they'd understand it's not apples to apples. A little humility goes a long way.
